Diablo Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 The amp in my Laney RB7 combo (300w, 2x10) looks like it has gone west. Rather than buy an amp and a couple of separate cabs, I thought well I in effect already have one 2x10 in a cab already. But I cannot find any info from Laney about what the speaker configuration is regarding impedance. So the modders among you, is it quite feasible to buy an amp (~500w), an 8 ohm cab, and then rewire my RB7 speakers into a jack or a speakon plug in the cab then connect that into the amp too? I figure it is, but I've not dismantled my RB7 to see if the existing speakers are in series or parallel, how they are wired into the amp, and what impedance they have. If this is clearly a really silly idea I won't embark further! Seems a bit daft to buy a 2x10 cab if I already have one. Cheers, Rich Quote
HowieBass Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Wouldn't it be cheaper to get the amp in the combo looked at first? Did you like the sound you were getting from the combo? Might be a simple fix (even an internal fuse perhaps, unless you saw the smoke demon). Quote

It still works, but smells like burning electrical devise. I never really liked the sound so much, it sounded "twangy" if that is the technical term. Not juicy lows, just not-very-nice sounding mids and highs. Quote

In my experience (from switching cabs and amps) the cab has more of an effect on the sound of your bass that the amp. Which means you may buy a brand new amp, and it'll sound just as middy though the Laney speakers. But if you want to recycle your cab it's pretty easy. I checked the manual on Laney's website and your speakers have a combined impedance of 8 ohms. I fitted a speakon connector in an old combo I had, so I could use it as an extension speaker. It was pretty simple and a speakon connector is cheap, at about £4 on ebay. Edited March 23, 2014 by gjones Quote
Diablo Posted March 24, 2014 Author Posted March 24, 2014 Cheers, I feel a bit of ebay and cabinet chopping coming up. I was going to use it as an extension cab / monitor rather than primary air shifting. I have the RB7 manual and did search the Laney site but never found the impedance. I guess if it still sounds middy after this then at least I tried Cheers, Rich Quote
