Hobbayne
My mum had that record when I was a kid, The line about yellow chinkies went over my head till about 10 years later when the penny dropped.

markorbit
Cool. Always good to see Herbie clips. Haven't seen that one before. Even back then he had ten years mileage on the same bass...

HowieBass
Yeah I remember this from my youth. I think this is from the era when they were allowed to pre-record the instrumental backing track but vocals had to be live for this kind of TV spot. karlfer
Great band, loved them as a child. You realise you are responsible for me watching Dirty Dirty Creep Creep after that! She was certainly the object of this 12 year old's desire

Green Alsatian
Some of my favourite Herbie work was on War of the Worlds, with Thunderchild being my favourite:
EssentialTension
That Blue Mink song has questionable lyrics!
Possibly so by present standards but it was nearly half a century ago and it was no doubt positive and forward looking for it's time. Rumple
A few years ago I sold my EBS cab to a kid who lived next door to him, can't remember his name but I'm sure he said he had had a go on the blue Jazz and it was hard to play because of the very high action that Herbie prefers. What a voice - and great hair! That's a super vid and a great song, despite the questionable-today lyrics. I'm off to see the Herb-ster again on Sunday in Brighton, so will wave to him for y'alls

Conan
One thing I'm slowly figuring out is that I don't enjoy Herbie's tone too much. There seems to be a point where you use flats and a foam mute and you somehow make the pitch of the note change as you play it. I'm listening to "Banner Man" by Blue Mink
I wasn't familiar with that track, but I've just listened to it and I LOVE Herbie's tone on it! Funny how subjective our ears are isn't it! To be fair, there are other instruments down there with the bass - certainly a tuba or some such brass instrument... there could be some sort of cancellation/reinforcement going on.... just a thought.
