Yeah stick to the smaller stuff nowadays myself - did go to o2 Dublin a few weeks back and was BLOWN AWAY by Zac Brown... Stevie Wonder in the same venue a few years previous was a disappointment so it may be the act as much as the venue...

Zac brown is great! He is really pushing a band on his record label who I actually prefer: Blackberry Smoke. Their whole live show. 'Live at Georgia theatre' is on YouTube. Check it out, I think you'll like it :)

I must say that Glasgow has just gotten another decent venue, The Hydro. I went to see Nickelback there and enjoyed it. I was sitting down right enough, but its certainly a lot better gig than the old SECC. Nothing can compare with the old Glasgow Appollo right enough. That place was legendary.

So I guess its true. It depends on venue and act

I've just tried to find it and it's gone. It is up in individual tracks still but not in full. Here's a great little acoustic number (which isn't much like the rockier stuff)...

Funnily enough I do enjoy the odd big event. I like to see things on a much bigger scale than I've ever managed to get involved in. I like , too , to go see stuff so far from what I've ever been involved in that it's a total change for me - like ballet for instance. I don't enjoy smaller gigs so much. I tend to get to see lots of local bands on the same circuit as us and it's too much of a busman's holiday. I'm not good as 'audience' in those circs. I just want to be involved. In fact I always feel the need to introduce myself to bands and let them know I'm a player rather than a punter. I suppose I should have said 'just' a punter which isn't very nice but it's true. Personality thing , really. I couldn't care less what I eat but I love cooking. I don't read much but I write tons. If I watch a movie I sit dreaming up a better ending etc. I'm a creator rather than a consumer by nature.

Nah, rock n roll is all about doing what you want and not compromising for anyone.

So, you don't want to go out and be herded like cattle?

Dude, you rock!!

Thank you, from the bottom of my big warm fluffy slippers :)

I actually don't like going to any gigs. At all. I don't want to watch someone else playing - I want to be gigging!
I do get this, very much. However, every now and then I see someone who does something really interesting that I would never have thought of, and it sends my writing off into wholly new directions. But it's always a weird support act, or some guy in an obscure tent at a festival. Never someone whose records i own already.

This is the thing I like best about playing in an originals act, the multiband gigs where I get to see something I would never in a million years have bought a ticket for, or looked up online.

Without wanting to over-generalise then I have to say that I've enjoyed most of the small-medium venue gigs I've been to in the last 10 years more than the bigger arenas and outdoor festivals. I've seen the Sisters Of Mercy a number of times (not in their 80s best sadly), and the best atmosphere and sound by far was one of the secret warm-up gigs they did at Joseph's Well in Leeds; loud but clear sound and VERY close to the band both in proximity and other ways.

I don't mind going to gigs, it's the enormous prices that are charged these days that get me. We have the Eden Project just up the road, who do their 'Eden Sessions' every year. They announced Elbow last week, I thought about going, until I found they want £35 plus £5 booking fee, after which I decided I only like 'One day like this' and went off the idea. Years ago I would go anyway, and doubtless enjoy myself, but these days I have to really like a band before forking out to see them. The days of discovering new music by checking out live bands I'm not familiar with have gone. Mind you, then they announced the Pixies-now that's another matter entirely!

I try not to go to any big gigs, just don't enjoy them, usually end up just feeling ripped off. Even seeing the absolutely brilliant Arctic Monkeys was a rubbis experience for me because of the venue. On the other hand, I could quite happily set up camp and live at the Brudenell in Leeds and go and see whoever's playing. Have been to quite a few gigs there over the last few years to bands I've hardly heard of, sometimes never heard, and haven't had a bad experience yet. Even Johnny Marr was ok on Tuesday! Next up is Mike Watt (whom I've seen before but have had no exposure to his current stuff) and then Melt Banana (whom I 've only just discovered and only heard a couple of things on youtube). Gigs like this are what keeps you alive.

It was bad enough when people used to wave their phones around in your face. Now it's hulking great pad things. Next time I go to a gig I'll try to take a big flat screen television in with me and spend all night staring at it at arms length.

What about those bloody flags at Glastonbury, how much do they pay for a ticket? stand in a muddy field behind some twat with a flag.

Talk about being one stage removed from reality. Everything's fine, don't worry - just stare at your screen!

More to the point, how are you all getting tickets for KB before the official release date?!
Those who have been registered as fans on the official fan site (like my good self) were given a code to book early.
resulting in yesterdays announcement that there are now 7 more dates.
:)

There was a fan club/mailing list only presale on Wednesday morning. Only those who'd signed up to the list before March 1st got the presale code. Even so, the 15 nights sold out, and 7 more have been added

I like going to jazz gigs as you are nearly always within a few feet of the players - no large screens required!

You like going to Jazz gigs?

I think it all depends on the band you're going to see and where they are at in their musical career.

I can remember seeing Living Colour play a festival gig and failing to project themselves to the crowd, I got the feeling they hadn't really thought about how they were going to play to a large audience.

More recently I saw Coldplay make the transition from smaller venue to the MEN on the 'Rush of Blood…' tour, they seemed to grasp what they needed to do to reach to the back of the venue, it was a fascinating to see when you realised they were going to be huge, maybe they knew it too.

Off to see George Porter tomorrow in Manc, I'll let you know how it went...

Forgot to mention the forum ( used to be town& country ) in Kentish town. Great venue. One of the Venus I didn't know much about at the time was the national in kilburn.
My one and only gig there was nirvana on an added date of their tour.( don't think it was nevermind). They were brilliant.
Nearly forgot the electric ballroom in Camden . Odd venue , but I like it. Makes me laugh to think that, during the day it's lots of stalls selling stuff.

can put up with crap acoustics and crap venue and crap beer and all manner of other crap things but the one thing that really grips my sh*t is trying to see through a sea of smartphone screens
