bubinga5 Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 (edited) When i was very young i loved hip hop. still do. its part of myself. i recognised that most of it didn't have the musical arrangements of the other soul music i was listening to. like comparing Stevie Wonder to Public Enemy. but i still had a thing for Hip Hop. and i don't know why although this is subjective, like anything creative, i was drawn to a certain type of HipHop. the funky kind. Usually it was west coast, with early NWA, but then with New York GangStarr, who to this day for me are the finest hiphop act to ever record this genre. but then i hear the X Clan. Mos Def, Jurassic 5, The Herbaliser just great smoker's hip hop..The Pharcyde The Roots are just epic. anyway, when the chips are down, and i want to listen to some proper stuff. this is the sh*t. imo. DO YOU LOVE HIP HOP.? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGpvI9vN9qU Edited March 29, 2014 by bubinga5 Quote
ubit Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 (edited) I like some of it but get a bit confused as to where the boundaries are between hip hop and rap etc, but I suppose if you like something, then its good, right? Edited March 29, 2014 by ubit Quote
steve-bbb Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 i once bought the CD single of disposable heroes of hiphoprisy Television - does that count? Quote
miles'tone Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Can't listen to your link on my phone unfortunately but I did see Guru's Jazzmatazz at a festival once (Glastonbury?) Incredible! N'dea Davenport sang with them too. Big thumbs up for The Pharcyde also. I was at Phoenix '96 and was literally frog marched to a marquee to see them by a mate who insisted, "you're a bass player, you HAVE to check these guys OUT!!"(I had wanted at the time to see some now long forgotten Indie boll*cks). man he was so right! It was packed in there and they tore it up, had everyone in the palm if their hand. I became an instant fan! Quote
ratman Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Ah, Jurassic5, A Day At The Races, class. And nobody's mentioned De La Soul yet! Quote
i don't think there are any boundaries. in my experience Rap is Hip Hiop, just a different word for the same genre. Quote

Galliano had some great rappers over the years. and they did cross over from soul funk to Hip Hop. Quote

bubinga5 Posted March 29, 2014 Author Posted March 29, 2014 (edited) a furious track from the masters. such a classic. i can't describe who good a rapper and lyricist Chuck D is. Edited March 29, 2014 by bubinga5 Quote
Monckyman Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 (edited) Tribe called Quest used to get my attention for intelligent minimalism. My daughter seems to end up with some sod or other rapping in the middle of whatever song she records and it seems to me just like lip service. Surely, post will smith and the rapping gap mum ad hip hop is a mouldering in it's grave? Edited March 29, 2014 by Monckyman Quote

Spoombung Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 I have only one hiphop record which I still like and play occasionally: http://youtu.be/95gP3m-uBHA I've gotta admit I'm attracted to the spooky atmospheres and loops rather than the lyrics Quote
Spoombung Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 I did see Grandmaster Flash on his first UK tour in 1980 and really enjoyed that. Quote
Prime_BASS Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Wish is gone to see public enemy in Nottingham last year. I'm not too down on very many groups but a tribe called quest and public enemy feature on my iTunes playlist a fair bit. Quote

RoRi Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 To answer the question, no (I don't like the 'standard', average hip hop).
