steve-bbb Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 how much can you afford to lose? If you can happily withstand a financial loss equivalent to the price of this item then why not give it a punt? he might turn out to be totally honest and genuine and unfalteringly reliable Quote
Sean Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Seriously, if he's an Oceanographer he should be able to afford either a new one or get a Bergantino. Quote

pete.young Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Ive never heard any professionals say "on sea". Its always "at sea". That would have been the first clue for me. Quote

Woodinblack Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Paypal is fine if you are posting registered delivery, but for a local pickup you want cash, otherwise you are one chargeback away from losing your money. Quote
Grassie Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Surely if the buyer was an oceanographer he'd be after a Galleon Krueger... Quote
geoham Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 The scam here is a classic overpayment scam.... It would go something like this:- - Sale agreed - You receive a Paypal payment for more than you expect - You are told there is extra to pay a shipping fee or similar, and little for yourself for your trouble - You receive instructions to Western Union or wire transfer the money to the shipping company. (The 'little extra' makes this all seem worthwhile) - Shortly after, the Paypal payment is reversed or discovered to have come from a hacked account - You're out of pocket for whatever you paid the 'shipping company' Quote
