davedave
Well, the support bands bass player just managed to drag my matamp off the top of the cab. Maybe his second bottle of wine wasn't a good idea. Next time someone turns up without an amp they'd better be offering me a reach around. f***ing pellet. Diablo
what kind of bass player turns up for a gig without an amp....? I often see and have drummers share core kit (all but cymbals) but never backline or guitars. I personally don't drink before a gig, and very occasionally have a pint in an interval, but that is it. I'm not sure I've met a bassist who can neck a bottle of wine and still play a tight set. Cheers, Rich
davedave
One bottle before, one during. Fuming doesn't even begin to describe my mood right now.
Diablo
At least you have two empty bottles to bash him over the head with, or to insert forcefully as required. I never like saying "no" to anyone who wants to borrow gear, but there is always that 1 time in 100 that the person is a moron and breaks your stuff, then walks away and pretends it was nothing to do with them. More and more I'm afraid I just say no, explain that my gear is my gear and I am responsible for it, and their feck-up is not my problem. I have a lot of specialist tooling for vintage motorcycles and the same applies, it stays in my workshop and I am the only one who uses it. Why didn't he DI into the desk...? Would have saved him going to A&E to have a wine bottle removed..! Cheers, Rich
davedave
There are a couple of the band that we've known for a few years. They seemed pretty embarrassed after it happened. The guy who did it can't actually walk now (self inflicted). He is that pissed that he's just tripped over his bass in the car park and fallen on his face. Bad drills. On the bright side, the amp worked fine for our set. I'll have a good look at it in the morning.
icastle
This reinforces my default answer of 'No' whenever the topic of gear sharing raises it's head, both on here and IRL.
JapanAxe
That would make dreadfully cross.
Lozz196
Since going back to gigs where gear-sharing is often asked, as soon as I turn up I find out who the bassists are and chat to them. If they are fools, drunk, or both, they`re using someone elses amp other than mine. Luckily, to date, they`ve been neither. Only time I was slightly annoyed was after using it, one band didn`t say thanks, but then they were youngsters, and had many young females hanging around them. I like to think I would have had better manners at that age, but I can see how they may have been distracted.
davedave
Morning all. That's a good point Loz. The cheeky sod didn't thank me either. We're playing with them again in Newcastle next month. I wonder if he'll ask to use it again? I've got a funny feeling he will.
FinnDave
Never lend out your gear, got to be a firm rule. I also never play through anyone else's gear unless it is jam or festival where the organizers supply it. Even then I am rarely happy with the sound I get. As for drinking two bottle of wine at a gig, completely wrong. Drink afterwards, never before or during, no one plays better after a drink, they just think they do. JTUK
How did the guy approach you to borrow the amp...? as just turning up and taking that chance is pretty dumb if the answer turns out to be a big fat NO. I am not sure what excuse I'd want to hear and if I didn't like the look of them, then I wouldn't entertain it anyway. My general position would be if your gear is crap or non-existant, then what problem is that of mine..? Having said that, I've hired my gear out to touring bands if I can get to the sound check and I know the venue and the engr.
chrismuzz
In the rare event that I play gigs with other bands I've been really lucky. I've been asked to lend my amp/cab a fair few times in the last few years, but it's always been with plenty of notice before the actual date! By the way dave, was your Matamp ok?!?! quimbymeat
I played a gig last week and the bassist from the support forgot his bass.... I told him to call around and he got my singers girlfriends bass to play. I also told him to d.i. his fingers for good patter. Folk can share cabinets and that's it. If they have no amp then buy a preamp and go straight into the pa.
chrismuzz
forgot his bass....
Ha! I'm more than happy to lend my cab or amp to somebody, but my basses and pedals are just for me!!
0175westwood29
i always try and find my fellow bassists at gigs, and have a chat. especially if im lending them my gear! have no trouble lending my gear or letting people use it i just make sure that i set up the amp and tell them to not touch the eq or volume. i just keep in mind the guys who are respectful and who arent so, in fact had one bassist asked the venues sound guy if he could borrow my amp, i had to let him as with out they would have had to pull the gig and i didnt want that to happen. andy
Wooks79
Not cool at all, as if someone has that little respect for anothers (very expensive) gear! Edited March 31, 2014 by Wooks79

badboy1984
I was using the main bands bass amp on a gig once because the venue sound guy said it will be easier if everyone uses the same bass amp so less mess around for bass tone. During our set in my band the bass amp start to cut on and off occasionally and I was like, i wish i was using my own amp because I know it will be reliable ......... Handwired
I hate drunken slappers trying to get on stage and tripping over leads.
Westie9
Leads are my big thing... I get wound up by people trampling all over my leads!!! As for amps and cabs: it's taken a great deal of time and money to get the equipment I've got. I can't necessarily afford to get it repaired due to some plonker pushing it too hard... As a previous entry said though, if you say "No" then that particular player can't perform and you are seen as the bad guy regardless whether he forgot his own gear or not... Tom Brookes Music
Sharing gear is the norm for me with the majority of my gigs on bass being multi band unsigned stuff. Usually to a small crowd in a shithole natch. Can't say that I'm overly precious about what amo I use....I've got a nice pedalboard setup with a di straight to foh. As for getting drunk before playing-ive never understood that at all.....spend x amount of cash on gear, band practices and x amount of time practicing to then get pissed and not be able to play properly or remember it the next is just nuts imo!
