jimcroisdale Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 (edited) Hey all, I'm on the lookout for a new 5 string. I like my guitars to be super simple - I'm happy to sacrifice flexibility for this, no probs. Gimme one pickup and a volume knob and I'm happy, but they just don't seem to make quality basses this way. I like 17mm string spacing, but apart from that I'm open to suggestions. I like Stingrays. I like Warwicks Not a Fender fan. Any ideas? :-) Jim Edited April 1, 2014 by jimcroisdale Quote
Musicman20 Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Stingray 5 single H. 17.5 mm spacing. Simple vol/EQ with a switch on the one pup for three settings. You could also try a Sterling 5 H. Quote
badboy1984 Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Do a John Myung on his bass ........ disable all the EQ knob on the bass and keep the volume knob active. Quote
ead Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 You're welcome to try my Dingwall, but it has got 4 knobs and probably 18mm spacing so may not be what you're after at all really Quote
Cosmo Valdemar Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 What about a Yamaha BB425? It does have two pickups but you can always leave the back one off. Quote
JTUK Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Hear the B first....everything else is secondary Quote
dannybuoy Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 (edited) I recommend a BB as above, although the BB1025X is a good step up if it's within budget, and the BB2025X if you've just won the lottery. 18mm spacing at the bridge, very narrow at the nut (42mm wide). Pickup selector switch and volume/tone knobs. How much are you looking to spend? Edited April 1, 2014 by dannybuoy Quote
jimcroisdale Posted April 1, 2014 Author Posted April 1, 2014 The Yammies are nice basses, but not really any simpler than what I've got now. One pickup is an absolute must. Three knobs is an absolute max (vol/treb/bass) Quote
neepheid Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 G&L L-1505? Depends if you think the two switches are cheating or not http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/USA/basses/L1505/index.asp Quote
BigRedX Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Gus G3 Five Passive. Volume, Tone and Pickup Selector. Since all Guss basses are custom made to order you could probably specify a single pickup and volume control only on yours. Quote

You could safely set the switches for series and passive, then tape them inside the body somewhere and take the battery out. I'm not selling mine though! Quote
bassist_lewis Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 There was an old G&L L5000 in the for sale section a while back, one pick up with volume and tone. Not sure on the string spacing. Quote
fretmeister Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Sandberg basic 5. Sooooper build quality. Quote
davebass66 Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Lakland BG5 if you can find one over here, great basses! (Skyline as well) Quote
Merton Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014
ACG Graft Passive?
Yes I would vote this too Quote
LukeFRC Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014

shame thats stacked pots so actually 6 knobs! (volume - balance / neck coil bass - treble / bridge coil bass - treble ) I would look at an ACG Quote

geoffbyrne Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Sterling by Musicman SUB V - all right, it has 3 knobs, and did need a wee bit work on it after I got it, but once set up, it's terrific for the money. G. Quote
Storky Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Looking at your preferences, the obvious choice is a MM Classic Stingray 5. Perhaps too obvious? Quote
Annoying Twit Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 My Rockbass 5 string is pretty simple. It does have two pickups, and a tone control. But, since changing pickup or adjusting the tone control makes pretty much no difference to the sound at all, they don't really count. Quote
jimcroisdale Posted April 4, 2014 Author Posted April 4, 2014 Just bagged a Stingray 5 S.U.B. USA in black for £350..... If I could justify the £1000+ for a regular Stingray I would, but the SUB is practically the same and good enough for me. See how it goes, anyway... :-) Quote
