PaulWarning
What are we calling 'Low' .....? I run my Basses at 2mm on the G to 2.5mm on the E (at the 17th).
well fender recommend 2.4mm for a standard precision at the 17th fret so that's about average, I always think there's far to much male posturing about string height, "my action is lower than yours nah nahnahnah nah" bit like measuring dick sizes among 12 year olds,
Horizontalste
I think something that's often overlooked is the strings relationship with the fretboard. If your set to the radius of the fretboard with the G being slightly closer then even a relatively high action can be comfortable. I've played basses in shops where they 'eyeball it' and even being slightly out can make it feel pants.
