JackieMoon
Hi all, I have an LH500 head which i want to run a tech 21 vt bass pedal through. I was wondering if its better to run it 'in front' or through the effects loop? I am not after a heavy grind just that ampeg classic thick valve tone. Cheers, JM
thisnameistaken
I'd put it in front of the amp. That's where it's designed to run, and it will give more drive to the tube in the LH500's preamp too. Just take it easy with the EQ - the LH500 sounds pretty scooped by default and so does the VT Bass, so you might end up wiping out your mids completely. JackieMoon
Warning duly noted! Mid knobs to full! Cheers.
danbowskill
the vt bass is far from scooped imo (can get massive mids out of it) ..... the bass driver is though! this is my set up ,in front is miles better. i swaped my preamp tube for a premium jj ecc803 and it sounds bloomin lovley :-) Edited April 7, 2014 by danbowskill
dannybuoy
Agreed, I've put V1 of the VT Bass through a real time analyser and with the bass, mids, and character at noon and the treble at 10 o'clock, it was pretty much flat with a 5k speaker sim rolloff, and you can dial in a mid boost from there. The LH500 has a passive EQ so mids are probably cut only, if so that knob should be cranked and then backed off a little to taste. Biaeothanata-Bassist
Agreed with everyone above, run the VT in front of the Lh500. I have an LH500 as my amp and it is as people say a passive tone control on the mids so it's purely cut BUT the clever thing about the amp is that it doesn't just adjust a specified frequency band on each knob, it compensates each change you make to balance out the frequency curve a bit better. -that's what the manual says anyway and it does seem that way when you adjust the dials-
thisnameistaken
Should add I'm a big fan of the LH500. I remember when I was starting out there were these Peavey MkIII heads everywhere because they were simple and reliable and they sounded good. I wouldn't be surprised if the LH500 ends up being similarly ubiquitous.
Biaeothanata-Bassist
Agreed! The LH500 is a brilliant, my favourite amp beside the Trace Elliot GP12SMX
