convert passive to passive/active?

I want to get a relatively cheap jazz bass and mod it so that it is passive, but can also be switched to an active circuit. I really like that very hi-fi sound of Status basses. Is there any circuit I could drop in that would give that kind of sound?

Great pre amp. Has the switch you are after. Not hifi like status though, East pre's are much nicer than that .
