6stringbassist
I want to start playing double bass, I aim to get one probably late August early September. I want to be able to play a bit when I start looking though, I think that's important, so I want to have lessons, I'm also worried about hurting myself, obviously learning proper technique will hopefully avoid any unnecessary injuries. Does anyone know of any teachers around the Birmingham area. Also, these basses are big, will one fit into a VW Golf ?. And, one last thing, are things like this worth considering http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-4-Double-Bass-Czec...p3286.m14.l1318 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Double-Bass-German-M...p3286.m14.l1318 Thanks Kevin Edited July 14, 2008 by 6stringbassist
Mikey D
Monster Trumpet player, bassist and jazzer: Percy Pursglove He's also a very knowledgable, great teacher with very good technique. Also you have Arnie Somogyi and Mark Hodgson come and teach in the conservatoire, not sure how free they would be to do one-2-ones wiht someone who is not studying but you can only ask. Mikey D
Forgot about Ryan Trebilcock aswell. Also graduated quite a few years ago and teaches some classes at Birmingham conservatoire. Good bassist. Ryan Trebilcock Of course, all the guys I've mentioned are predominantly upright Jazzers, but you may wish to get a lesson with Mark as he also plays ridiculous electric bass so can give you some pointers on that if needed. 6stringbassist
Hi Thanks for those suggestions...erm is it compulsary to have an odd name if playing upright, only joking. I will check those out, I love the sound of the instrument, I only really listen to jazz, that varies between modern electric, and 50's and 60's stuff, but a lot of the NuJazz guys use upright bass, people like Robert Glasper for instance, and EJ Strickland. Golchen
I guess he'd have to be a pretty fat teacher to not fit in your car?!?!

I guess if it'll fit in a Micra, then it'll fit in a Golf ? Andy
wordsetcetera
Hello, It will definitely be okay in a golf, just make sure that you support the bass around the heel of the neck. As regards buying a bass, try Peter Tyler, he is in Maidenhead, Berks. Yes, I know it's a long way, but, he will be able to sort you out with something between £600-£20,000. He's a great bloke. www.tylerbasses.co.uk Ta ra fer a bit, Simon
