BigRedX
I know that the ads go some way toward covering the running costs of Basschat, but I never realised how much they slow down the site until I spent a couple of weeks working at a client's office, where despite the fact that they had a seriously fast internet connection display of the Basschat pages was considerably slower than on the main browser of my computer at home where I run an Ad-blocking extension.
I use Google Chrome and the ad blocker programme is free although they ask for a donation. It is good. I have to say I don't think it is *that* embarrassing - it is 2014 and people use online dating. And the other thing is this only predicts trends so you often get offered things you aren't remotely interested in.

Silvia Bluejay
On my desktop I have Adblock on all sites except Basschat. On my Android tablet I do without Adblock after I tried it out last year and it messed up my OS. Anyway, to get back to the dating adverts, some of them may read the cookies on your hard disk but others appear out of nowhere. This is a still relevant status update which I posted on my Facebook profile back in mid-January:
I've deliberately left the marital status field empty on my FB profile - for lack of a "None of your f**king business" option - so it assumes I'm single and shows me dating ads with photos of men. Then I log on to Basschat and I'm welcomed by GoogleAds with photos of single women waiting for my call. My BC account has a gender setting and knows I'm female, by the way. I wish the internet could make its mind up on whether I'm straight or gay. And then p*ss off and leave me alone!
This is interesting. I'd never noticed a difference between Adblock ON or Adblock OFF, and therefore assumed the ads were downloaded (and were counted) but just discarded. If they're not downloaded, does BC still get revenue for page clicks, or must the individual ad be seen to go to a computer? On my Android tablet, I always get annoying ads for dating services, even though I've never done a search even vaguely in that direction. I love drinking, smoking, porn and violence though, but never seem to get an ad for any of those.
