What's the answer? My bass is made of it, but I'd like to say it properly.

I have got to 50 without ever saying the offending word out loud so I guess I'll cope. I also made sure my bass was made of Mahogany, American Walnut and Ebony before I bought it, just to avoid this particular issue. ;)

Won't lie - this was part of the reason I went Ash and Maple! I can actually pronounce them!

Unless someone will now say its Ahh (with a silent S) and Map-lay instead!

I once knew someone who called Kawasaki motobikes 'kawass-acki' (if that meakes sense - difficult to write it down!)

Everyone knows that's pronounced "Kwacker".

I had no idea what Penge was, and I've lived in both Tooting and Blackheath :-D

I have no idea where Penge, seen it on signs, but couldn't point to it on a map !

Anyone know how to pronounce "Lykke Li"? Any help would be much appreciated.
[/quote]

Impossible to write in English, but the most difficult letter here is the "y" in Lykke. I'd say it comes rather close to the "ü" in Blücher (german family name)
So, something like Lükah Lee without any form of stress on the "ah" bit. In phonetic, I think the "ah" bit is the roundish capital E that is turned 180 degrees.

That said, one would have to have reasonably good knowledge about the phonetic system to come much closer, and also it depends much on whether you say it in her native South-Swedish tongue or in Stockholmese.

You mean like 'KawASSaki' as opposed to 'KawasAKi'?

Probably (tricky stuff, writing about pronunciation!), though now you've reminded me that I usually pronounce it 'kawa sarky' . . . . so that's a third option. Arrgh!!

Now I'm invisiging a TV series about a stealthy assassin with trademark cutting put-downs - KawaSarky Ninja

I thought it was a skin disease until I moved here. Now I realise it's more a state of mind.

Good job they named the market street after a much easier to pronounce tree/timber!
