The Funk Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 I've been saying it wrong for years. I even laughed at my dad for pronouncing it "when gay". One of you could have told me earlier! Quote
ambient Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 I always thought it kind of rhymed with dinghy but with an 'e', so it's wengy. Quote
CamdenRob Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 (edited) I always thought it was "VenGee"... Then again I'm often wrong and am likely to have based that pronunciation on something I once heard in a pub. Edited April 22, 2014 by CamdenRob Quote
Woodinblack Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 How is it pronounced then? I said it like whinge with an 'e' Quote
rk7 Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 What's the answer? My bass is made of it, but I'd like to say it properly. And what is the correct spelling of Ziricote/Ziracote etc? RK Quote

Roland Rock Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Yes, "wen-gay" or "that bastard splinter wood" as I sometimes call it. Quote
Bilbo Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 I have got to 50 without ever saying the offending word out loud so I guess I'll cope. I also made sure my bass was made of Mahogany, American Walnut and Ebony before I bought it, just to avoid this particular issue. Quote

chrismuzz Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 I pronounce it "Wenj". I quite like how stupid that sounds Quote
flyfisher Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 (edited) It's just a matter of em-fasiss. I once knew someone who called Kawasaki motobikes 'kawass-acki' (if that meakes sense - difficult to write it down!) Edited April 22, 2014 by flyfisher Quote

ahpook Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Most people outside the SE of England would have trouble pronouncing 'Penge'. Quote

BassTractor Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 (edited)
Anyone know how to pronounce "Lykke Li"? Any help would be much appreciated.
Impossible to write in English, but the most difficult letter here is the "y" in Lykke. I'd say it comes rather close to the "ü" in Blücher (german family name) So, something like Lükah Lee without any form of stress on the "ah" bit. In phonetic, I think the "ah" bit is the roundish capital E that is turned 180 degrees. That said, one would have to have reasonably good knowledge about the phonetic system to come much closer, and also it depends much on whether you say it in her native South-Swedish tongue or in Stockholmese.
