My favourites were the ESP, Yammaha BB, American std Precision and '73 Precision.

Also liked the Ric and Ibanez

My favourites were the Ric 4003, American std Precision and Gibson EB13

Favourites were the Gibson Les Paul, '73 Precision, Gibson Ripper and Krist Novocelic RD

Favourites were Burns Hank Marvin, Squier '51 Precision, Gibson Krist Novocelic RD, Gibson Ripper, '73 Precision and Ric 4003

I think the main thing I took from those videos is how similar most of the basses sounded to each other.

Also, the Fender Starcaster and Jaguar did nothing for me in any of the clips.

That's telling, isn't it? Bass guitars sound like bass guitars. Any of 'em would be fine as long as you like the look and playability.

Hmm I wouldn't go that far. i think that was true with some styles like pic and finger tap but on the finger styles there were some some big variations.

I generally agreed with Grahams assessment. Most basses had something going for them. Personally I was disappointing with the Gibson basses and the squire together with the Fender Jags and Starcaster.

If I had to pick one, I'd go for the 2014 Precision but the Ric 4003 and Gibson RD would be high on my list too.

To be honest they all sounded remarkably similar, with only tiny nuances between them. However, the bass I liked the tone of most for all the styles was the Gibson LP, a bit more individual than the others with a nice, yet balanced, growl. My least favourite was the Fender Starcaster across all the styles with the EB2 coming a close second to last.
