In which bands wad/is the bass player the best musician in the band? John Lennon acknowledged Paul McCartney ad comparatively the best Nasser while he said the rest of the Beatles weren't outstanding. Mick Karn in Japan might be another example. Any mokre?

What parameters are you going by?
I was wondering that as well. Most of the replies so far seem to relate to the best 'player' but I interpreted the OPs question as a bit wider. In the Beatles example, Macca was clearly a great bass player but surely his defining feature is his all-round musical ability? He not only plays bass but also guitar, piano and drums ( and probably more for all I know) and his songwriting is also pretty legendary.

Is that the sort of thing the OP meant by 'best musician' in a bad?

With all respect to Annoying Twit, the question is absolutely barking :)

Music is not a competition.

I agree. However, I think most would agree that some people are more adept at expressing themselves through music than others. They may also be better at "playing off" of what another musician plays, thus inventing something new him/herself, as in being spontanious. No, it is not a competion, but the fact remains.

In his book "Street Player: My "Chicago Story" drummer Danny Seraphine states that bassist Peter Cetera was regarded as one of the "better" musicans in the band.

I'm surprised that so far no none has mentioned the elephant in the room....Jack Bruce..."CREAM". ;)

Yeah, agreed. Not just a great bassist but very talented multi instrumentalist and songwriter.

Steve Harris and John Entwistle?
John Entwistle i would agree with but i'm not sure about Steve Harris.....he is a great bass player but i don't know if musically he is above that of ay Dave Murray??

It is very subjective and difficult to define.
