Dood
Hey all! My go-to 4 stringer, an 80's PJBS has certainly seen a good life and is in superb condition for it's age, but the pickup covers are a little on the tatty side and I'd like to get some replacements. I'd tried in the past by getting a set of clones off of ebay but they didn't fit in the routs. They were too large. Anyone had to do this themselves or have any advice on ensuring I get the correct ones? Cheers! Dooooood
hamfist
Is this particularly the J or the P one ? Or both of course ?
Dood
oh both!
hamfist
How about putting the exact sizes of your routs on this thread and we can all look in our gear refuse drawers. If we have any appropriate sized pickup covers we could get in touch. I know I've got a few unused P pickup covers in my drawer.
Dood
That's very kind! Thank you! I'll get measuring later on. The pickups in question that are in the bass are nothing fancy, They are stock Japanese P and J pickups for this 80's bass. I bought some shells off ebay and they were slightly too big to fit in the routs - maybe just a millimetre in it - so I think I'll need to get my glasses out to make sure I read them correctly! Alternatively - I'd be interested to know who has upgraded the pickups in their own Jazz Bass Special and what pickups slotted straight in without work. I've seen EMG and Seymour Duncan upgrades so that *may* give an indication of size.
Kempy535
I have a Jazz Special that I put Wizards in. The new cover fitted on the Jazz pick up but I had to use the original on the P pick up as the new ones were a tiny bit to big.
Paul S
My old one had Seymour Duncan pickups fitted in both positions and as the covers both had 'Basslines' written on them I guess that is a straight fit.
Dood
Cheers Paul! - Ah yes, I'd panged for a second PJBS but alas funds didn't allow - so i've decided it's time to spruce this one up a bit! Thanks for the info - I'll check the sizes of mine against the Basslines - I'm sure mine must match in that case.
Dood
I finally got round to measuring the pickups! The P style has a shell that appears to me about 1mm shorter than many brands hence my problem with covers previously. It's dimensions are: 27mm x 55mm and to my eye it's around 59-60mm between the screw hole centres. The J pup is 94.5mm x 17.5mm and about 24mm across to the opposite screw hole.
