Mykesbass
@TheGreek - it's not just Washburn Taurus T24 basses that don't get mentioned much. I've noted that ESP/LTD basses aren't discussed much here. Personally I believe that there are just too many brands (and models) of basses for all of them to get the attention they deserve.
Agreed, the ESP/LTD basses and guitars are excellent at all price points.I just think that not enough people know about them beyond the more dramatic designs. Annoying Twit
I wasn't aware of the spalted GSR205SM. The red finish makes the spalting difficult to see in a photo. Hopefully I'll see one in real life at some time.
kodiakblair
Here's a pic of the sunburst version AT Looks a lot better. I don't understand why they would use a dark stain on the other one, Yet that was the most common version I saw when having a look. Spotted this Stagg on Ebay for £170 BIN. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stagg-Wooden-Electric-Bass-/291137701399?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item43c928c617 Don't think it's really a great looker though, headstock looks wrong to me

kodiakblair
That ticks all the boxes ead. If it's neck is anything like my milestone, be a dream to play.
tauzero
The neck on the Zephyr, if the 4-string models are directly comparable to the 5s, would be a bit chunkier than the neck on the Grind. That's why I sold my Zephyr 5 - great instrument which oozed quality but the neck just wasn't for me.
Bolo
On the subject of 'forgotten' brands, there seems to be little to no attention for B.C.Rich, who was one of the defining brands for rock and metal music. Edited May 5, 2014 by Bolo
Annoying Twit
Most of the comments on B.C. Rich that I've seen here have been along the lines of "pointiest bass ever" and "you'll have someone's eye out with that." Less than £300 new, and I could imagine someone thinking it's a great looking bass, but not for me. I much prefer the look and finish of the mockingbird, but it's over £300 Edited May 5, 2014 by Annoying Twit
KingBollock
Is that the Revenge Warlock? The main reason I didn't buy one was because of the hardware, chrome is just wrong on it. Also the headstock, I wanted the Widow version. I ended up with the NT which has double Ps and an ebony fretboard, my ideal bass in fact. It cost me £265, but that was second hand (including postage and a Warwick coffin case). But, if I ever get the opportunity to buy another guitar, the guitar version of the Revenge comes in a gorgeous trans purple with white binding, that's what I would go for, and they're less than £300, usually around £220. kodiakblair
The mockingbird deserves to be over £300. It's a Beauty, there was one with Quilted Maple went for £85 or £88 last night on Ebay. Had a wee bit damage on the back but still with £15 postage somebody got a bargain. Chase are selling a Tanglewood Canyon III in Spalted on Ebay just now. £299.99 big discount from the norm of £399. But is it the best looking ? Reminds me of a Curbow and I like Curbows. Fretless looks even better but can't load a picture of one so here's the link. http://www.chasedirect.co.uk/special-sale/tanglewood-canyon-iii-3-long-scale-bass-guitar-4-string Larger image 2 . Annoying Twit
@KingBollock I don't know much about BC Rich basses, I just googled and chose a picture of a suitably pointy one. The Canyon III for £299 is a very impressive looking bass for the money IMHO. @Kodiakblair - This thread is referencing new prices. If we go second hand, then truly beautiful basses can be bought for silly prices. Edited May 5, 2014 by Annoying Twit
kodiakblair
Gotcha AT only mentioned the mockingbird cos was gonna bid £95 at 42 secs then didn't. Looked at some strange things an Ali Baba today, See-Thru with leds, horns carved as snakes, won't post until I hear back from the companies with prices and shipping. Can't do final figures with import costs without them.
Annoying Twit
I may be looking in the wrong places, but I think there are fewer strange looking basses on sites such as Ali Baba than there were a few years ago. BTW: Kodiakblair found the following ex-demo bass with mucho spaltedness, and five string fretlessness for well under £300 even if postage is included. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3ce1b50a83 That's a lot of bass attractiveness for the money, and in my eyes answers the question in the thread title. Edit: I checked Ali Baba again. There are more interesting basses than I remember seeing last time I trawled through. E.g. this one: http://www.alibaba.c..._533595396.html Not too bad, but I must admit that I find quilt tops a bit too much, and the inlays are a bit too green for me. But, I could imagine other people liking it. This one isn't bad, but looks a bit squeezed. http://www.alibaba.c..._481579968.html Same company as one of the above, but again it has the right ingredients but doesn't do it for me. The (presumably) veneer here somehow doesn't look right. http://www.alibaba.c..._481580107.html The less said about this one, the better http://www.alibaba.c...665991.html?s=p I really like the headstock and brand (font etc.) of this one, but the body looks a bit 'brewer's droop'. http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/XB-B4-Starlight-bass-guitar-in_499507020.html This is a 'stunning designed masterpiece' we are told. I think it would look nicer with more traditional darker wings. The model holding the bass looks like she could do the 'rock chick' thing if she held the bass in a more convincing fashion. http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Electric-Bass-Guitar-with-2x-Tone_1158073275.html This one looks good and extra-stripy, but the double MM style pickups look too big for me. Too blue inlays. Hmm.... am I subconciously looking for reasons why these are not quite right? http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Wood-made-electric-bass-guitar-from_895608661.html Edited May 31, 2014 by Annoying Twit

Woodinblack
Just bought a short scale Squire Jaguar for £181 (actually less, as I had vouchers) after trying one.
