Horizontalste Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 I get bags more volume out of my amp when I put my pedals in front of it? If I just go bass to amp the limiter kicks in but using my pedals with the volume set to the same as off I can really crank it, in fact I can go flat out with it. I'm not complaining at all, just wondering what happens to my signal that the amp likes? Amp is a Genz contour, pedals are polytune, opto stomp, mxr od, bass is a Ray. Quote
HowieBass Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 I would think that if you're compressing the signal you'll be evening out the volume and by boosting the lows you'll be consistently that bit louder? Quote

Tdw Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Presumably some of the pedals reduce the dynamic range (compress) in some way, or reduce the low frequencies, if you want to increase the (percieved) volume then compression is the most effective way, at the expense of dynamic control. Quote
cattytown Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 The compressor will compress increasing loudness by taming peaks. Quote
hamfist Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Yup, compression. Peaks are no higher (or even lower) but the perceived volume is significantly greater as the average volume is higher Quote
