Xeno Jono
Hi Guys and Gals, I am thinking of swapping out the neck on my '95 MiM J-bass for a 70's style one. Purely for cosmetic reasons, i love the look of the wide inlays. I have seen a couple of 70's replica one son the Bay retailing for about £100, but these look as though they might cheapen my guitar. Are they any good or will they be detrimental to the quality of my bass? I have a feeling that they might Should i maybe save my pennies and get a decent one? Or just can the idea altogether? Your opinions are appreciated Jono
Conan
Give it a try! I've just done something similar, putting the neck of a 2007 CIJ Geddy Lee J (based on a 1972 model, so definitely "70s style") onto my 2009 MIM J. It looks nice and plays well. What's not to like? Have a look here for a related thread... brensabre79
It's a popular mod these days. I like the blocks and binding too Ones on the bay can be hit or miss to be honest. Especially as there's a lot of people cashing in on the popularity of the 70s blocks & binding look these days. I've done this with a Squier VM neck (the older type with satin) on a P-bass body, it looks the bomb, fits properly and plays well too. I'd spend a bit more on an allparts one (they come up on the bay occasionally) or get yourself a secondhand Squier VM.
gjones
The cheaper (£100) after market necks are not bad but they won't be as good as your Fender. If I were you I'd save my pennies and go for a Warmoth. You can't get better http://www.warmoth.com/ Edited May 16, 2014 by gjones
Muzz
The Warmoth stuff is fantastic, tho it can get very pricey - once you've paid import duty and shipping, you can end up paying as much for the neck as the bass is worth. It's a great site to kill time on, though... I've had several MightyMite necks, and they've all been good. For the price, they're even better... hamfist
I have bought several Mighty Mite necks and also, recently, a Jazz neck from cwgp2010 from Holland on ebay. The Mighty Mite necks are good but the cwgp neck I found was very impressive. Easily, easily as good as a good MIM Fender neck. Mine had inlay blocks that were very well done also. Highly recommended by me.
Xeno Jono
I've seen the mightmite ones on t'bay but didn't know if they were any good. Will look at Warmoth tho, saw an ebony one that sold on here not long ago. Looked very nice. And cwgp. Will look out for those.
