SlapbassSteve
So I'm after some timber to make a nice stand for my U-Bass. Where's the best place to source a decent priced bit of fancy mahogany these days? I remember going to a local timber yard with my Dad down in Haywards Heath when I was growing up down in the South, but a few years have passed since then and I'm currently based in Liverpool/Manchester. Do I still need to find a decent local timber yard or is there some kind of 'woodBay' that I've missed? While I think about it, is eBay any good for this? Cheers in advance folks! Prosebass
It is always better to see the wood in 'the flesh' so as to speak. When I was building basses I bought all my stock from http://www.johnboddytimber.co.uk/ Depending on what you need i may be able to help as I still have some wood in the 'shed' Having watched your vids, great stuff Edited May 21, 2014 by Prosebass
bengreen49
Does it need to be mahogany? Plenty of decent native species around.
Bigjas
I would find a local timber yard or saw mill. I wouldn't want to buy timber off the net, its always best to see before you buy, to look for any defects and to look at and compare grain patterns. SlapbassSteve
Cheers guys, so the consensus is to try and find it in person still I just need a couple of small(perhaps 1ft square, 2cm thick) sheets from which to cut the stand. I like the idea of using mahogany so that it matches the U-Bass I'm building it for, although in future I'd be looking at sourcing local exotic-looking British timber(if such a thing exists, I'm not too clued up on wood yet)
bengreen49
Ah ok. Have a quick look at this, there may be something local to you: http://thewoodhaven.co.uk/resources/uk-wood-suppliers/ There will be more dotted about but the guys that run these things don't tend to advertise very well... all my local suppliers were found through word of mouth. Roland Rock
For nice one offs, I use Timberline. Bob is a lovely chap: http://www.exotichardwoods.co.uk For bulk, I usually go to Brooks Brothers or Associated Timber (who I believe have bought John Boddys) All of the above deliver
Pete1967
Ditto the advice about seeing before buying. I can recommend Kirk at Exotic Hardwoods UK Ltd (www.exotichardwoodsukltd.co.uk). He's based in Chapel En Le Frith, which might not be unreachable from where you are.
DaveFry
Two pieces of mahogany a foot square and less than an inch thick ? ....... Sounds like a recycled coffee table from a charity shop job to me .
Skinner
There used to be a company called Touchstone Tonewoods (very good) I think they are still going.
