If going the sansamp route, I'd recommend the VT Bass over the Sansamp BDDI / BDI-21. Smoother and tubier and without the gaping hole in the midrange (unless you dial it in with the mid control of course).

True - I usually have to dial some mids back in with my amp when I use the BDI21, and then I roll the blend back to 12 o'clock so I get the best of both :)

Now this is exactly what I want to hear. I bet my tubey warmth is different to your tubey warmth though

It sounds like you are after a similar subtle 'Tubey warmth' to me, but in any case the VT pedal will nail anything from subtle to screaming!!
The VT certainly solved my problems when I switched from using Trace gear to a more modern lightweight amp.

It is one of the best pieces of kit I have ever bought.

I prefer the VT Bass too, but the difference in price between the VT and BDI is not reflected in the difference in performance. Judicious use of the blend control will sort out the mid-scoop problem. :)

Also a BDI is cheap enough to keep in your gig bag as back-up in case your amp goes boobs-aloft!
