Cameronj279 Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 (edited) To cut a long story short I very very briefly owned an ACG bass over the last fortnight and everything about it just felt and sounded perfect so I was considering getting a custom build done So made a trip to Moffat on Monday and played a few of the stock basses (including the ART Recurve which is quite simply perfect) and got an idea of his Filter preamps and different body shapes. Into the workshop and was barraged by masses of different woods. So the specs are now chosen and deposit is paid. Excitement has kicked in and the waiting now begins! Specs are : Recurve 5 34" Redwood Burl top, Black Limba body core, Purpleheart accent 5 Piece neck - Wenge/maple/purplehear/maple/Wenge Spalted Maple fretboard ACG DFM 4k preamp 2x Multi Coil 5 pickups Will be a while but I shall update this as the process goes along as I found other peoples build threads helpful/interesting For now, have this Edited April 9, 2015 by Cameronj279 Quote
eude Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Fantastic news mate! I'm a big fan of Alan's work, currently having a 5 string made too, no build thread yet as the top is still on its way over from America... That is going to be a lovely bass. What pickups are you going for? I look forward to watching this come alive! Ewan Quote
Cameronj279 Posted May 28, 2014 Author Posted May 28, 2014 Thought I put them in the original post (shall amend!). Going for 2 50mm humbuckers. If money were permitting it'd be the multi coils though! Quote
eude Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Nice. Yup, if I could afford the Multi Coils I'd be doing the same, they really sound impressive, such clarity and authority. Amazing stuff and worth every penny I'm sure, if only I had more pennies... Eude Quote
BassBus Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Don't think you'll regret this order. I'm a recent convert to Alan's work too. Always liked the Recurve shape. Looking forward to watching this develope. Quote
Cameronj279 Posted June 12, 2014 Author Posted June 12, 2014 Wasn't expecting any photos from Alan for at least a few months but got this today. Fretlines cut Quote
skelf Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Should have made clear. The body wood is machined to size the top book match and sized. Purpleheart also machined. Just the neck laminates to sort out and then it is time to get out the big bottle of glue. Quote
rubis Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 This is gonna look mint, love a nice bit of Redwood Quote
Cameronj279 Posted October 26, 2014 Author Posted October 26, 2014 (edited) Starting to take shape. I have also spoken to Alan about the bridge pickup position. I'm wanting to get it in a more 'musicman sweetspot' kind of position. Edited October 26, 2014 by Cameronj279 Quote
scojack Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Very nice, i do like your choice of woods .. class Quote
Kev Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 That fretboard is superb, is that really maple?! Quote

Kev Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Why every luthier doesn't use this acrylic impregnated technique I'll never know, some of the woods you can use as fingerboards is crazy cool. I guess he could do one with buckeye burl, now that would be something... Quote

Although I find Buckeye Burl to be very hit or miss for my liking! Quote
skelf Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 (edited) The guy that supplies me with the acrylic has retired and now only supplies two builders me being one of them. There is a limit to what you can use I suspect buckeye might not be possible. Edited January 17, 2015 by skelf Quote

skelf Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 No I have amboyna burl which looks great. I have a stack of them arriving this week including more ART tops and finger boards. It is not the burl aspect of buckeye that is the problem it is the soft pulpy areas and the large voids. Quote
Cameronj279 Posted January 31, 2015 Author Posted January 31, 2015 Very slight change in spec for the Recurve. It's now going to be installed with the multi-coil pickups. Quote

Eude [/quote] Only used them very briefly when I specced the bass in May but was blown away by them (even with my extremely limited ability to use the DFM preamp!). I'm not clued up on the interface boards (I know there are 2 types) but I'm sure Alan will be able to keep me right. Quote
