bakerster135
Can anyone tell what's going on here? http://ameblo.jp/repair-works/image-10888083019-11220836329.html Am I right in thinking that's TWO metal can op-amps in there? Can anyone make out any of the other components, and suggest what their role in the circuit might be?
Sibob
Well theres two transistors there, not opamps. I don't think the Animato has been de-boxed from a DIY perspective, I can't see a schematic on a real quick Google search. There are a few clones floating around, however how close these are to the original I don't know. Si
JapanAxe
Somebody has had a go at removing the black gunk from the components, so maybe we will see a schematic online soon.
Crowella
Hi guys, first time poster, long time lurker. I took a look inside one of these a few days ago and started work on some schematics. I put the links around a few places. Best place to grab it and get an understanding of the circuit is at diystompboxes. http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=108850.0 Sorry for the necromancy on this thread, felt it was relevant and first to come up on a search so it should benefit those looking. paul_5
Thanks for the resurrection Crowella, I've just had a look at the diySB thread and you've whetted my appetite to consider another dirtbox build... Gotta love them Muff variants!

Crowella
Thank you guys Still working out the kinks. I got it running last night. The insane amount of gain was there but it sounded too bassy with not enough attack. I'm going to give a few things a try to try and match the sound since I may have made an error with one of the capacitor values. I also don't have the correct transistors so I'm going to have to err on the close enough is good enough side. It's been good fun though. EDIT: I got around to getting it working tonight, have a video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_Kh8VNE5lI Edited November 6, 2014 by icastle Link Fixed. BigBassBob
While the Animato isn't something I'd want I know there's an army of Muse fans who would be all over a clone and that one sounds pretty close!
BigBassBob
The tone isn't 100% the same but the texture of it is there. I'd say "close enough" but I'm curious to see where this leads with further R and D
Crowella
Thank you heaps. The attack was the main part I wanted to focus on. I can say that is about what I'd expect. It's the decay tone that isn't quite there yet. Again, I'm limited now by what I can get my hands on and considering I was using silicon transistors instead of those "mojo" germaniums (also lower gain ones in the big muff stage), I'm happy with where it's at. I'd gig it no issues right now but the perfectionist in me wants it virtually bang on.
Crowella
*bump* I boxed up one. With more gain, a little brighter and less noisy. I've had a lot of support with this so thank you all so much. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fpd96Ox8kzo Edited November 6, 2014 by icastle Link Fixed. paul_5
Sounds good, especially with the blend!
Crowella
Thank you heaps! Going to set up a pre-order page tomorrow. If you want to guarantee one first, let me know. The pre-order will be $200 AUD including shipping and will be limited to 20 between this site and everywhere else. After pre-order, I will start to charge for shipping on top of the purchase which is approx $20 AUD. Basically, jump in now and its approx $175 USD, or £110 The pedals, if all goes to plan, should be ready and be shipped out early December. The enclosures and pcbs will be painted and etched externally to speed it up and make the builds consistent. cheddatom
Just wanted to say that I got the pedal from Crowella just before christmas and having used it a couple of times can confirm that it's absolutely ace! I'll post some samples ASAP

cheddatom
Barge concepts blender/feedback thing but I'll do some samples un-blended. I should have chance to do it on Friday
mcnach
would have been awesome to have a clean blend incorporated into this
bakerster135
would have been awesome to have a clean blend incorporated into this
Yeah, think Adam (Crowella) has been working on this with his new "Bitmap" pedal. With this though, I think he just wanted to get a good, working clone of the original Animato out there and there was clearly a demand. John K did an awesome clone with a clean blend, but they sold out ridiculously quickly. Details on that here. Would recommend that everyone checks out his "Bass Overdrives" page, the man's built so many great clones!...
cheddatom
I run all my pedals through the barge concepts dealie as I use the feedback loop a lot, so lack of blend wasn't an issue for me. With the tone knob at 11AM and less it seems to retain plenty of low end anyway
Crowella
Yeah, my aim was to just create a faithful replication with no bells and whistles while the next one will be built up to be what it should really be like and used.
cheddatom
Sorry for the lateness, the sample is here: http://rifffactory.co.uk/animated.mp3 I play the same riff 3 times, once on clean, once with just the animated on, and then once with the animated at 50% blend where I like it There's absolutely no processing going on here, everything is flat
