A large percentage of people on Internet forums don't go on them to learn anything as they are already convinced they know everything there is to know about everything.
Their sole reason for frequenting forums is to reinforce their belief that they are right/superior & everybody else is wrong/inferior.
In which case, BC is not going to be a particularly good place to discuss OT subjects because there will always be opposing views that won't reinforce your own.

In that sense, BC is a bit like reading half a dozen daily newspapers instead of just reading the one that aligns with your own views.

The problem I have with internet opinions, at times, is it takes a while to suss
out who knows what they are talking about and who has just nicked it from an earlier thread
or forum and is just repeating it to belong in some sort of clique or sound like some sort
of 'authority'

Yep..you get them everywhere but you need to be part of a discussion platform for a while to get
to know who they are..

Except that the good thing about OT discussions on BC is that the main common factor here is an interest in bass, which means there is a wide variety of views about other subjects, which makes most of the OT discussions more interesting. IMO, obviously.
Nearly all of the OT threads i've ever read have no mention of bass at all. If they did they wouldn't be OT would they?

I keep well away from OT threads on BC now and probably the only thing i've learnt is that i'll never ask a bass player about anything other than their bass guitar and equipment. :)
A good maxim that I adhere to as well :)

OT is a tedious place. It used to be a place of great humour and wit*. Now it just seems to be dominated by confrontation or banality.

*I'm not referring to Big Beef Chief, who was a infernal bore IMO.

I think when people write their actual character doesn`t come across. At work, in a previous job, both my line manager and myself would veto each others e-mails before sending - only when on touchy subjects - as both of us in writing looked like we were spoiling for a fight, yet it was never our intention, and indeed very far away from our actual characters. If my boss was reading mine I`d often hear "ouch" or something similar, and it would be likewise with me reading his.

I think that`s why people use the emoticons - it conveys sarcasm or humour when the words themselves can look quite snotty.

One aspect I never see mentioned, but which I believe is important, is that of speed.
Writing takes a lot more time than reading, and a hasty reading of text that was produced at a totally different pace, may convey quite different "emotional" content than what was felt by the one who wrote it.
Someone trying to remain factual and precise probably will "suffer" from this effect to even larger degree, and may easily be interpreted as being snotty, whilst maybe being very lighthearted and friendly when writing.

Then there's the classic bit of people automatically assuming that the person on the other end resembles themselves to quite some degree - thus totally disregarding likely differences in culture, age, education, background etc., and too easily concluding from that shared "likeness" that the other one then MUST be an arsehole if they write something very "wrong".
On YouTube, I saw som flogging that went on and on before somebody finally said something along the lines of "You guys know nothing about her. Maybe she's is a 12 year old girl from a third world country, who has just gained access to the web". (Yes, I do stay away from YT comments normally.)

Do the people who get upset actually realise that folk are actually entitled to a different opinion ?

I'm sure nobody actually intends to cause offence to anybody. Let's be honest, I'm a bald, middle aged guy who has certain views on certain things. I am entitled to have my opinion on subjects, I'm also interested in other peoples opinions. In the middle of it all it's an opportunity to learn as I see it, as you may hear something you didn't know before.

Can't resist winding though once someone starts to bite, it's my nature.

I think some people would like their audience to simply act as an echo chamber and reinforce their own opinions. Heaven forbid anyone should have the nerve to disagree with them.

So I am sitting here reading through some of the posts on here and there always seem to be somebody complaining about something or another when there is a debate going on throwing there toys out of the pram if some one else says something that they don't agree with it is not just on basschat that this happens it is on other sites too I must admit I sit here and laugh to myself at the thought of some one getting all steamed up banging away on there keyboards in anger or complaining to mods about people like little school children when there really is nothing to complain about. So why take it so seriously it is only the internet I can understand getting upset if somebody is personally attacking you but 9 times out of 10 people just have no sense of humour and take it all to seriously.

So do you guys think it is funny like I do or do you think it should be all regimented and serious would love to hear your views on this :)

Opinions are great. It's how they're expressed that sometimes sucks :)
Or twisted, turned & exagerated into something that it was never meant to be by someone who should know better.
Good job I'm not fattist. ;)

8 posts on a recent thread on a new film about Jaco Pastorius and 44 posts in this thread is a good reason i don't spend anywhere near as much time on here as i used to. Signing out now.
What have I missed? I don't understand why the number of posts in either thread is relevant?
Why would that prevent you from spending time here? :)

That's a classic.
My daughter recently taught me: "Notice that XKCD always is relevant...".
I wouldn't know, but I tend to believe her.

Sounds like too much of a simplification to me, and on the verge of false dichotomy. People can have so many reasons for repeating stuff that others have said earlier. It's often part of learning and of internalising new knowledge.
E.g. when all of the cab specialists agree on certain aspects of cab building, it's not strange that people believe it, and start spreading the good word.

Also, in my few years on here, I've several times read that people state they repeat what others have said before just so as to make sure that the same people won't have to answer the same questions over and over again. In that case it's part of a forum awareness and willingness to contribute what little one can. Laudable in my book.
