My PC is too creaky to play the Betas, so they have been loaded onto our eldest's for evaluation and admiration. I'll be sorely tempted to get adequate hardware, I don't doubt, but SHMBO has to be convinced first. There is hope, but it won't be soon... Every once in a while I do wonder if it was worth the cost as the atmosphere in the DDF forum is a bit, well, intense. The vast majority are I.T. professionals of one sort or another and all of them seem to be hardcore gamers (being present during the 'Ironman' proposal discussion was an education and no mistake ). Because I'm neither of these things these days I seem to get politely ignored most of the time - if I'm lucky one or two of them will take pity on me and answer one of my questions occasionally, but they do have a bit of tendency to pounce if one makes the tiniest error of fact. Oh, and they all speak this sort of 'sounds-like-it-should-be-English-but isn't-really'; and quite a lot of them have (as far as I've been able to ascertain) no sense of humour whatsoever. On the bright side, it does make me feel good about changing careers all those years ago - being a musician is LOADS more fun than being an I.T. teacher! [/quote] It came with Crazy Painter, Cuthbert Goes Walkabout, Cuthbert Goes Digging, Pengo and Keys Of The Wizard. I never saw any other games for it that you could buy, all the other games I played came from books I got from the local library, I had to type them in myself. No, seriously, it's sad, really it is. I was, until recently, an IT Manager, and now I don't understand any of these new-fangled jargon definitions and specs. I could handle Pentium n, I could grasp MHz, and even GHz (yes, yes; I really could..!). I think the rot set in when they brought out Tru-Color. Am I a lost cause, or just old..? The new version being developed has much more than sublime graphics and hunter/killer gameplay. The old Elite is still entirely playable, albeit ergonomically 'clunky' by modern standards; the new one promises to correct all that. The footage and demo/betas presently available don't (yet...) do it full justice; there's a potential that is quite difficult to portray if one hasn't already the bug, imo. That will change, probably, when the final commercial version is released and the plenitude of the game becomes apparent. Can't come too soon... Had a quick look just now, and, as expected, it not only looks great, but also seems to incorporate a lot of game play. I sooo need to stay away from it, but I do feel the Game Acquisition Syndrome. Played it to death on my Acorn A3000, and had another spell when I acquired a Risc PC a few years ago. In my opinion, it was the ultimate implementation of old Elite. The simple instruction set did mean a little extra building things, this was offset by the full time/any time conditional execution and barrel shifter which could be invoked "on the fly" in most instructions at little/no cost. In real life when your boss, the salesperson in the shop, the traffic warden, the person, listening to techno at frightening volume, sitting in front of you on the bus, piss you off......you have to hold your tongue. Because there are consequences to actually saying what you feel in REAL life. On the internet there are none. So when you get narked by the frustrating irritations in your, day to day, life. I was amazed to see how the technology has not just survived but flourished, and is now used in a huge variety of everyday applications.
