Love him or hate him Allan can really play and it's quite rock orientated despite the enormous improvisational ability of the band. If you don't like it at first glance do listen on, Jimmy Johnson does a killer short (12 bars) solo at the end. There have been some solo offerings put up on here before, I think what sets this apart is the phenomenal sense of placement and time keeping that Jimmy displays, he is a world master IMO. I did work out Johnson's solo on Metal Fatique (the LP version) years ago - just a perfectly placed little solo - so I will have a listen. Saw JJ with AH in a church in Bristol about 80 years ago. Good gig as I recall. Johnson's highlights are with Wayne (no relation) Johnson tho': Arrowhead, Grasshopper and Everybody is Painting Pictures (Spirit Of The Dancer and Keeping The Dream Alive have a couple of Flim performances but the main events are the first 3 recordings). True musicianship if you can be a master in every situation and every style..Far from the latest hype but just a household name you can depend upon on.. When I watched the Holdsworth video I was thinking how great it is to hear a nice arrangement, excellent musicians, some great chordchanges... What a cold shower when I turn on the radio and get the feeling like I'm being insulted by cheap marketing tunes far from the spirit of musicality and its sheer power to soothe. For me, along with Stanley, he's Alembic's premier sound ambassador... His basses always sound huge! Good shout on the Wackerman albums, they are great - Allan has been playing 'The Fifth' (from Dreams, Nightmares & Improvisations) in his sets for a while.
