jakenewmanbass
Just found this, it's a live version of Allan Holdsworths' Panic Station from the album 'Metal Fatigue'. Love him or hate him Allan can really play and it's quite rock orientated despite the enormous improvisational ability of the band. If you don't like it at first glance do listen on, Jimmy Johnson does a killer short (12 bars) solo at the end. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ro26GZlg52A The album version has a really nice bass solo on too which I have transcribed I will try and post it soon, I will also transcribe this at some point. There have been some solo offerings put up on here before, I think what sets this apart is the phenomenal sense of placement and time keeping that Jimmy displays, he is a world master IMO. wombatboter
Thanks a lot for this... i used to listen to Holdsworth quite a lot in the eighties, this all brings back memories. Especially the groove of Metal Fatigue is a killer, what a bassplayer and what a drummer !
TKenrick
Nice find Jake, thanks for posting this, I love Holdsworth's approach to voicings. I think he's doing a gig at the jazz cafe in september. Does anyone have any recommendations for essential Holdsworth records to check out?
lowdown
If You Like JJ. You might want to check out the Album 'Grasshopper', 1983. From the Wayne Johnson Trio, With Bill Berg on drums. Very nice playing and blowing all round. Good link Jake. Garry

jakenewmanbass
Bumping this topic for Bilbo as I think he/you were away when I posted. Check Jimmy out Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!!
Bilbo
When I get a chance (at work so no access to YouTube). I did work out Johnson's solo on Metal Fatique (the LP version) years ago - just a perfectly placed little solo - so I will have a listen. Saw JJ with AH in a church in Bristol about 80 years ago. Good gig as I recall. Johnson's highlights are with Wayne (no relation) Johnson tho': Arrowhead, Grasshopper and Everybody is Painting Pictures (Spirit Of The Dancer and Keeping The Dream Alive have a couple of Flim performances but the main events are the first 3 recordings). Bad hair, great sound!
wombatboter
And he just deserves more respect if you think about the tasteful bassplaying Jimmy exposes when he plays with James Taylor.. True musicianship if you can be a master in every situation and every style..Far from the latest hype but just a household name you can depend upon on.. When I watched the Holdsworth video I was thinking how great it is to hear a nice arrangement, excellent musicians, some great chordchanges... What a cold shower when I turn on the radio and get the feeling like I'm being insulted by cheap marketing tunes far from the spirit of musicality and its sheer power to soothe. Steve Woodcock
Resurrecting this thread as I have just uploaded a play through video of Jimmy's Panic Station solo (album version):
visog
Nice! Love JJ. On top of the recommendations so far, I'd add Chad Wackerman's first to solo albums. For me, along with Stanley, he's Alembic's premier sound ambassador... His basses always sound huge! (Listen to the samples for 3 and 5: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/chadwackerman) Great fretless Alembic on #5 there. P.S. Fretted GWB35? Bilbo
There's some great Flim on the Flim and the BBs cds too.

Good shout on the Wackerman albums, they are great - Allan has been playing 'The Fifth' (from Dreams, Nightmares & Improvisations) in his sets for a while.
P.S. Fretted GWB35?
Nope, but close - it's a GWB2, that and the fretless GWB1 were the first Gary Willis signature basses from about 16 years ago.
There's some great Flim on the Flim and the BBs cds too.
Of course! I admit I don't have all of the BB releases yet though - I find it a bit 'light' compared to the Holdsworth, Wayne Johnson stuff etc. - however there's still THAT tone
