Biaeothanata-Bassist
Hey guys and gals. I'm looking for a pick guard for a jazz bass BUT i don't want it to have a pick up route in it as i'm thinking of sticking an EB-0 style hum bucker in it (I have a Dimarzio Will Power Neck laying un-used) in place of the usual neck position jazz pick up then use a stacked jazz pick up in the bridge position. I know this is un-conventional but i want to do it and have a few spare bits laying around un-used so i might as well use them. Any help would be appreciated. The cheaper the better too obviously haha Thanks very much

Thunderbird
I have never seen a guard without the routing I would think it would be a custom job or buy a sheet of material or have a go yourself
Biaeothanata-Bassist
Ah bugger! I wish i had the skills or equipment to do that. I know it's a simple job but i would totally mess it up. I saw you can get one off Warmoth but after postage, it would be quite expensive
dave_bass5
I got one from Sims Custom shop a few years ago. I was having my Lakland DJ5 converted to a PJ by the Gallery, so i got the correct sized PG from them and let the Gallery cut the pup hole out. It wasnt cheap (around £40 IIR) but it was a very high quality PG anyway. http://www.simscustom.com/

I suppose it's worth it for a Lakland bass. How did it turn out in the end? I've seen them on Warmoth's website but it's $25 then the shipping which I can't see as being cheap. The whole bass is just going to be a cheap little project to try and get that "Cliff Burton Rickenbacker" tone (mud bucker in the neck position, stacked Seymour Duncan jazz pick up in the bridge position in stead of the rickenbacker bridge pick up and then a stratocaster single coil put where the foam mute would be in the rickenbacker tailpiece so i'm just going to stick some cheap pickups i have laying around in to it along with the Dimarzio WP Neck) I'll keep scouring the net for a blank jazz pick guard from some where though. Hopefully one will come about for less
dave_bass5
Yes, that was expensive, but this was also a custom pick guard. I had to send my existing one for them to replicate as well as the DJ5 is a none standard fit. I was very happy with the quality though. Spot on and it felt expensive (if that's possible for a 3 play BWB pick guard). I must abmit I didn't really look around too much. If it had been a standard Fender copy I'm sure I could have got one for less.
Biaeothanata-Bassist
yeah that's what i thought with it being a non-fender copy plate. Typically, a mud bucker is 3.5 inches across and the standard jazz neck pick up is 3.6 inches across so it leaves a nasty gap each side. I might just bite the bullet, do that and then make a pick up ring to do round it or something. Seems like a cheaper option.

I spoke to him yesterday and he said he was feeling better It can't hurt to drop him a PM - worst he can say is no!
Simon.
I converted my Jazz to a P/J and got Chris McIntyre to make up a new plate to acommodate the P-pup. As with Dave up above, it's wasn't a cheap option (£40 or £45), but he did a very nice job. JTUK
Chris McIntyre is a quality luthier IMO, so if he makes plates for you, you will be in safe hands. I'd say £40-ish is a good price I had Sims do mine for a custom cut.
iiipopes
Pickguardian.com , and you can tell them exactly where you want the mudbucker cutout and they'll put it there.
TimAl
Happy to help if I can Biaeothanata-Bassist - please have a look at www.originalscratchplates.com for the essence of what I can produce - but happy to generate any shape you want although it will only be single ply, however you can have any image or colour on the plate itself . . . Cheers Tim
