Realistic wear

Does anyone who has a genuinely worn p bass have any pictures of it they can share ? I'm interested in where they do wear through. I've taken the shine off the paint nicely but I don't want to make it look like a belt sander job (which is what Google might show me)

I don't think there is a 'standard' wear pattern on a bass. It depends I think on who's owned it, I've seen basses that are only a year or so old that have been really badly knocked about, and instruments that are 30 years old and immaculate.

There's a book about Fender basses that's really good, lots of great photos of genuine old basses.

My 35 year old bass has played a 1000 gigs and has been through the wars but the only places it shows wear is the hardwear and the electrics. There's nothing but the odd dent on the neck and body.

Same with my `78 really, the odd knock or two but other than general grubbiness all ok. Contrast that with my mates late 60s Jazz, his has genuine wear where his forearm rubs on the top when playing. Looks very cool.

Every player is going the wear the finish in different places depending on the bass and how they play.

Each time I look at the average relic'd guitar no matter how realistic the wear looks the places that are worn are nearly always wrong for how I play, and I would have thought that the average musician would be able to spot this straight away.

No real buckle-rash, but some forearm wear and noticeably above the thumbrest. Plus a zillion little dints and dents all over the body

So basically for 'realistic' wear add a bit of buckle rash, drop it on the floor a couple of times and knock the headstock against a cymbal a few times
