BetaFunk
They are what they are and all play a much wider scope than pure pop. Bossa, Samba, Samba Reggae blah, blah, blah. Given the nature of trhe query, I think this level of detail is premature. They were included in the list because they come under the umbrella of Latin Music (and are all featured in encyclopedias of Latin Music accordingly).
They may all come under the the term Latin Music but to me Latin Grooves is more Tito Puente, Ruben Blades, Cachao etc than say Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento or Gal Costa. Specialist records shops (when they existed) would have had the former under Latin but the latter under Brazilian (or now MPB). I don't think that many DJs specializing in Latin Grooves would play too much Luiz Gonzaga or Choro, Balao and Forro. I know it's only a musical term but then i suppose Cliff Richard, Abba and Mantovani are just World Music when you come to think of it. lowdown
but I'm woefully ignorant about traditional latin music, latin jazz fusion and whatnot, so was hoping for some guidance on artists/albums even online learning materials.
You are not ignorant at all if this track is drawing your ears in, in fact you are spot on. The Bass on that track is very much the starting place, and a lot would be learnt from it. Feel, note placement and rhythm in traditional form right there for Cuban style (well one of them). Any Funky Latin Bass line would evolve from that groove (Cuban 3:2 or 2:3 clave). Some basic Bass chart ideas. http://www.nzmusician.co.nz/index.php/ps_pagename/article/pi_articleid/668 Basic Clave chart here. (Drum& Perc). http://www.formedia.ca/rhythms/1clave.html If you liked that track that you posted, you might well like the videos below as well. Afro Cuban All Stars Big Band. BetaFunk
This is one of the better offerings I've found so far - I'm wanting to expand my style bag, and have always felt that internalising by listening to the best sources is a good approach, but I'm woefully ignorant about traditional latin music, latin jazz fusion and whatnot, so was hoping for some guidance on artists/albums even online learning materials.
Now i understand what you are looking for and yes the term Latin Grooves is fine for the type of music you describe. The music on the cd is mainly Cuban Ritmo (rhythm) and Classic Salsa. Have a look for Cuban bands like Los Van Van, Los Papines, Los Karachi and Son 14 for a start. Happy hunting! Mcgiver69
I think you need to be more specific what you're looking for, Latin groove involve a lot and I mean it a lot of different styles. Each region has it's only music and fusions. South American music is very different from Central American and so on. Everything the guys here had advised only covers Brazilian and Cuban Music. I could recommend something a bit more fusion-ed and contemporaneous. Latin rock: - Carlos Vives Specially "El rock de mi pueblo" - Joe Vasconcellos - Cabas Merengue: - Orquesta International - Tono Rosario - Los Rosario Rock & folklore fusion - Liquado - Maracande - Irka y Tadeu - Xiomara Fortuna I'll post some samples when I get home. Whenever I put that album on the car stereo I am transported to an imaginary cruise in a convertible down the Pacific Coast highway to Tijuana. I've never been there and reality is it's an old Hyundai hatchback on the ring road in Nottingham...probably in the rain!
