Beautiful and great condition. GLWTS. One question: A friend of mine here in Germany had a store for instruments, some old ones as well. He once told me, that up to the 60s Framus sometimes used Rio Rosewood for the fingerboards. Maybe it is interesting to know for a future buyer, that this one is "rio-rosewood-free", is it? :)

Apparently, Rio Rosewood has a sweet smell that persists for years.
I don't know about 50 years, though.

Now, please don't flame me;
Rio Rosewood is an endangered species and should no longer be used for anything, even guitars.
A guitar from the 60's might also have ivory position markers or inlay around the sound hole.
I know that a lot of people, myself included, wouldn't knowingly buy ivory.
But some feel that 'old' ivory is OK.
What about rare woods?
Personally, I would still buy this guitar, even if some old catalogue turned up quoting 'Rio Rosewood fingerboard'
I'm sure that several BCers have bits of antique furniture made from what are now endangered woods.

Just wondering?

(Happy to convert this to a 'General Discussion' thread, if you would prefer)

I hope external links are allowed:

They say it is easy to recognise by looking at the colour and the number of pores. I was just wondering, since selling it could cause official problems. Of course the UK has signed the CITES protocol as well. So it might be worth the research. Depending on the age of the instrument it might be allowed to be sold, sometimes one needs a certificate of proof that it was build prior to a certain date. Of course only if it is rio rosewood at all.

I didn't mean to stirr things up here. I just thought it might be worth mentioning, since this one is a pretty old instrument. It is good to be on the safe side. :)

Bump ;-)

Looking at the sixth photo of the top of the fretboard,
and comparing with the photos in FunkyFresh's link and my 90's (Indian) rosewood fretboard,
I am fairly convinced that this is not Brazilian/Rio rosewood.
Hope that helps, psycoandy.

In regards to the Rio Rosewood discussion even if this was Rio Rosewood it wouldn't cause problems with sale, Warwick themselves still use Rio Rosewood in new builds from a stock they bought in advance of the ban (the wood itself was cut well before the ban was even discussed they bought it from a wood yard who had it there for donkeys).

There is no legal issue selling an instrument with Rio Rosewood used in it provided it was built pre-ban which this clearly was.

That is not quite correct. You need an official CITES certificate for the sale, which Warwick provides with the sale of their instruments. And everyone can get a certificate if the wood has been cut, or the instrument built, prior to the year 1992. So in this case, you would surely get legal problems, if you do not own such a certificate although the bass is from 1964. But it does not look like rio rosewood imho.
