ok, so this may not be the right place to post this, but i never really stray outside of the effects forum, so am sticking with what I know!

my friend played me Royal Blood the other week, and I was drunk so I forgot. Then tonight I saw them on the T in the Park highlights, and they are awesome, a great bass-driven 2-piece. So I want to know what other bands, not necessarily 2 piece but certainly bands without a guitarist, are there out there that people are into, where the bass is really driving everything. I know a few, but want to hear something new!

I know of, and love, dianogah, bear claw, death from above 1979 (obviously) and zu :)

can anyone else point me to something new and exciting?? and any info on how they use their pedals and amps to deal with the lack of guitars??

lazy of me to not search for any previous threads - this is a classic "drunk and at home on a friday night" thread!

I play in a hip hop band which is just me on bass and some 1 finger keys. The rest is rythym. It does mean though that on bass you need to think of layers and dynamics. The boy from Royal Blood does an amazin job. He has some really interesting sounds out a single bass, but I dont think you need to go that far to get soundin BIG on one bass. As long as you're clever on the stuff you use, and you are precise in what effects you use, I think you can soud prety massive.

Not rock by any measure, but there's Nerve (JoJo Mayer, John Davis & the Japanese guy).
Ultraista are also a worthy listen.

With no guitars too, as a bassist you have a lot more of the frequency range to play about with, so I've certainly been my most creative in a non-guitar band.

+1 for Royal Blood - watched them last night and was blown away by how great, phat and huge those two guys managed to sound!

There was also a little band from Scotland called Biffy Clyro I quite enjoyed too.

I love OM, great band.

For something diffrerent check out Rothko and the later project Rome Pays Off.

Tortoise may also have had only bass guitars and drums in their line up at one point.

this is of course in rock/post-rock based genres. Move into the Jazz spectrum and you have loads of guitar free, bass led action :)

Love a bit of Om and Lightning Bolt!

They play with a guitarist full-time now, but Big Business are definitely noteworthy!

There's a couple of other threads about two-piece/duos but if they haven't been mentioned, can I add Clatter?

EDIT: and Black Keys?

Was that the gig at the Exchange when Al fell off the stage?

I've seen them a few times in Bristol.
When they played The Cooler, several years back, I was completely blown away by them.
