mixingwithtom
Does the birch ply laminate give more strength than say maple, or is it just a convenient/practical choice? (G&L neck looking really good too!)
blablas
Due to the cross-wise glued wood grain of the separate layers I don't think it gives more strength, I primarily put it there for aesthetics.
blablas
Finished the G&L modification. With I bit of luck and some good will the new build will continue the coming weeks.
blablas
Once again, no progress on the mk4-4++. Yesterday evening I got the urge to modify the neck of my mk2-7. This was the first bass I made, over four years ago, after a break of about 15 years from the one I made before that. Meanwhile I've already made eleven new ones since I build this one. The neck profile, thickness and volute were not up to my current standards of building... time to do something about that! blablas
Applied furniture oil to the fingerboard. Mounted the tuners and put on the final layer of Danish oil. Volute mk.2. The neck profile is asymmetrical now and has a flatter shape, removed 3 millimeters from the neck thickness. blablas
Finally made some time to do something on this one again. Routed level the neck and routed the truss rod grooves. The headstock end of these grooves will be finished further on the milling machine at work. Edited August 6, 2017 by blablas
blablas
Finished off the groove ends. Decided to go for a little bit different approach from my previous builds, the groove ends on this neck will have no covers. blablas
Glued on the fingerboard and sawed of the excess wood at the sides (flush with the rough neck). Milled the fingerboard to headstock transition, also made the groove for the nut. Edited August 6, 2017 by blablas

blablas
Removed most of the unneeded wood and drilled the holes for the tuners. Edited August 6, 2017 by blablas
blablas
Love the colour of that FB
That's padauk, you don't see this wood being used for fingerboards very often. I love this colour for a fingerboard as well. It will turn darker over time, but when treated properly will always stay red. blablas
Q&D mounted all the tuners to get a feel of how the neck will balance... and just to see how it will look. Edited August 6, 2017 by blablas

blablas
That was not the source for my inspiration , it's a variation on my own headstock design.
blablas
Done some more doodling around with the tuners, most of the time I prefer to position them at an angle, this is roughly how I'm going to mount them.
