blablas Posted December 13, 2014 Author Posted December 13, 2014 (edited) prepared notches where the strings will come on the nut, such a no-brainer with the template this close by. This will probably be the last part that will be finalized at the end of this build. Edited August 6, 2017 by blablas Quote

blablas Posted December 14, 2014 Author Posted December 14, 2014 (edited) Cut the fret slots. Went like a breeze after the previous snakewood one. This is how I always do it, without any complicated jigs or machines, just a piece of wood with a straight edge, clamped a fraction next to the printed line, carefully press the saw with two fingers against this straight edge and start sawing. blablas Posted December 15, 2014 Author Posted December 15, 2014 (edited) Someone on the Dutch BasgitaarForum pointed out my simple fret sawing setup looked rather clumsy. This is how it should look and feel if you are right handed. Edited August 6, 2017 by blablas Quote
PlungerModerno Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 Serious Progress . Hope you enjoy the rest of the build - and get a fabulous 12 string monster at the end of it. I'm confident the results will be . . . delightful. Quote
blablas Posted December 20, 2014 Author Posted December 20, 2014 (edited) Leveled the sides of the neck (and removed that annoying paper ). Done the rough shaping of the headstock. Edited August 6, 2017 by blablas Quote

sblueplanet Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 I'd like to see you re-consider adding truss-rod covers. I think they add a touch of class. Quote
blablas Posted December 20, 2014 Author Posted December 20, 2014 That's a first, adding something plastic to give it class. For the time being I'm staying with the "naked" grooves, the headstock will be busy enough anyway with all those strings and tuners. Quote
tommorichards Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 What about a thin veneer of purpleheart or something. I reckon it could look pretty good with a thin visible sliver of the light wood showing, ive done a little "photoshop" (ms paint) for an idea. Quote
blablas Posted December 20, 2014 Author Posted December 20, 2014 I've done my stinking best to get the headstock looking as it is now, for the moment I'm not thinking of putting a cover on it. Quote
BassBus Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 I never understand the need for trus rod covers. They are just fiddly little things that get in the way when you need to make adjustments. Quote
blablas Posted December 20, 2014 Author Posted December 20, 2014 That was one of my considerations to leave them out with this build. Quote
HowieBass Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Those are about the cleanest looking truss rod adjustment routs I've seen in ages, no need to hide them. As it is you'll probably lose them behind all the strings anyway! It's looking really good - think you'll have it ready early next year? Quote
blablas Posted December 20, 2014 Author Posted December 20, 2014 (edited)
think you'll have it ready early next year?
I'm aiming for the end of January to somewhere halfway of February. Could be even sooner if I decide to go to my workshop at work to do some things that are easier done there than with the tools I've got at home, but I hope this is not going to be the case because right now I'm enjoying my hibernation (a five week vacation from that place). Annoying Twit Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Can't wait to see this all finished. Quote
HowieBass Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Nice little jig there for getting the holes drilled Quote
blablas Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 That's a alluminium DIY drilling jig. This is the most lazy, simple and reliable way to drill these side-dot holes at the exact position where I want them. Quote
blablas Posted March 5, 2015 Author Posted March 5, 2015 It's a long time ago I updated something on this build, been busy with other small projects and fooling around with another new toy, a NS-NXT-5 (lefty). I also did not feel the urge do something on this build, it's finally starting to itch again so I'm hoping to start doing things with this one later on this month, but first I need to finish my Harley Benton PB-Shorty to MMB-Shorty conversion. scojack Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I'm going to pinch that wee hole drilling jig idea ! so simple it's brilliant Quote
blablas Posted March 22, 2015 Author Posted March 22, 2015 (edited) Progress! I finally spent some time on this build again. Leveled the fingerboard and sanded it up to grain 1000, there are two coats of Danish oil on it now, I need to do one or two more to keep the fingerboard clean and protected when I'm putting in the frets and finish them off.
