Rustins Danish oil ,no oil sanding, I don't want to fill the wood and still like to feel the wood grain after oiling.
I just wipe it on with a paper towel, wait five(ish) minutes and rub it out again with a paper towel (I use several before I'm satisfied with this rubbing), wait four hours and repeat this process until I'm happy with the result, most of the time five or six coats will give the above result.

Great. Thanks very much. There's probably a hundred ways to finish a guitar and I think I've seen so many videos on youtube that I can't decide what I should do. But the photos you just posted look like my idea of a perfect finish.
I suspected there might be sanding between applications of oil. You make the process seem so simple :)

The process is dirt simple and does not take a lot of time to do, that's why like it so much. :)

In principle all the sanding must be done before oiling, most of the time I go up to grain 600 and sometimes when I want just I bit more shininess, like on a fingerboard for instance, I go up to grain 1000.

When everything is oiled and the oil has had proper time to dry l will also apply a hard wax, just for extra protection and that bit of extra zing to the shininess.

What I also like about oil is the finish is it's so easy to fix any dings as well. So much easier than lacquer.

Great finish on this one, as always.

I'll have to wait how this last coat will dry up but I think I'm done oiling.

Hi,

Terrific job !

I've been building something like a dozen of instruments on my side, but your job is fantastic.

My last is this one almost 10 years ago, but it's gone now, to a better home, I hope.

And by the way, you are right, dressing the frets is always a pain in the ass (sorry for being crude), that's why I prefer fretless. ;)

Just two questions, won't it be too heavy and unbalanced, because of the tuners ?

Proficiat !!!

Tony.

I don't know yet, that's something I'll find out once everything is assembled. ;)

Applied shielding inside the controls cavity and mounted the battery-box.

Mounted the bridge to double check the position and if the strings will line up the way I thought up... Is exactly what I wanted.

At first I was planning to, but after talking with Cataldo Basses over at TalkBass I decided to give it try as it is. For most of his 12 strings he uses these bridges, unmodified, without any problems.
If I run into any weird problems I can still modify it.

So you'll put a couple of grooves in every other saddle for the 'guitar' strings?
Yes, that's the idea.
By the way, how the hell do you tune a 12 string?
This is my first so I don't really know. ;) Probably with some patience.

The 8 string I made a few years back tunes without any problems, only setting it up the first time was a bit time consuming but no major pain.

Ah, what I really meant is what are the ratios - I was imagining octave and fifth above the bass string, which, after a quick Google, is in fact one suggested option - another common tuning is both guitar strings tuned to the octave above.

Aha. I will just start out with standard tuning, toying around with alternatives will for sure come later on.

First the machine must work, then the fun can begin.

I was already considering to do sound clips for this one.
You are not the first to ask (well, here on BassChat you are - but I post this build diary on a few other forums as well) and given 12 string clips are not that common I might be tempted to spend some time on them.

Things are progressing nicely - While many of us here appreciate the time it takes to photograph and answer questions about this intriguing project - Sound clips would be amazing.

Even just playing the open strings with a couple of pickup switches - or pick vs finger playing would be brilliant. If you don't get around to it that's fine too - but it would be an excellent way to round off the project (from our standpoint). From your perspective - it's having a 12 string that rocks!

Put some stuffing inside the cavity, still needs to be wired up further but to do that I first must place the pickups. Edited by blablas
