bass_ferret
Depends on the bass and the PA. Probably with di but not with mic - you cant eq up treble that aint there.
gilmour
Yes, provided it's a decent PA, the DI will give you a better response, but like Ferret points out you won't get any extra treble off the mic (it's only pickigng up what's there, so if you can't hear it, neither can it). Which then begs the question "why mic it up if you're not happy with the sound?" TBH there's little point in doing both live (although there is merit in doing it when recording) as the engineer will more likely just use the DI anyway, as it's the signal he has more control over. Of coure all this depends on the size of the system. If it's a small pub sized vocal PA then it is less likely to have a sub and generally in those situations I try to avoid putting any additional strain on the PA anyway. cheddatom
I think you'd be better off using just the DI for points already mentioned. I use a DI and mic live, because I get the soundman to roll the top off the DI and use the mic for all the top end, which is voiced nicely through a guitar amp.
