FX Pedal Battery Gets Hot!

I have a booster pedal that can be powered by a 9V DC battery, or a 9V DC centre neg PSU. I'd prefer to run it on battery power, but when I put a battery in it the unit doesn't work and the battery gets very hot!

It seems to work perfectly well with a 9V PSU but I don't have a pedal board and don't want to be bothered with a PSU as I believe the battery life in this unit is good and would see me OK for six or seven gigs...

Obviously there's an electrical short somewhere, but I have little electrical knowledge and don't know how to go about diagnosing the problem, far less fixing it...

Anyone had this problem before, and if so, what did you do about it?
Is it going to cost more to fix than the pedal is worth?

I thank you! :)

My first guess would be the PSU socket being faulty.

Thank you, sir... :)

Either a short on the battery clip (they are very flimsy aren't they?) or somewere on the PCB. You need to open up the pedal, check for signs of dirt/rust/whatever on the PCB, give a good spray with contact cleaner (scrub with an old toothbrush if needed). You also need to ceck the battery clip with a meter to see if it's shorted or not. My best bet is that the clip needs replacing.

Cheers

If the heating is sustained for any lengthed of time then it's not a dead short as the battery would cease to be a battery very quickly.
But sounds like excessive current demand.
Without looking at the circuit maybe some issue with a polarity reversal protection diode ?

Correct - a short on the battery clip. :) John has already received the pedal, found the fault, fixed it and it's being delivered via Royal Mail First Class signed for so I'll see it tomorrow!!

Many thanks and massive props to John for this - you are a diamond geezer Sir, and no mistake! :i-m_so_happy:
Isn't Basschat a great place? ...Mostly. ;)

The odd thing is that KiOgon's pic shows one of the "better" battery clips, normally we pay good money for top gear with this kind of cr*ppy clips:

these are destined to fail, all of them!

Not working and battery getting hot sounds like a dead short to me.

My first guess would be the PSU socket being faulty.

This! But probably not the PSU socket, but the battery terminals themselves, they may be touching metal, or eachother. But yes, that looks like a short affecting your battery.

edit: ah, arriving late to the party!

It was a short on the battery clip and John kindly fixed it for me. :)

Ah, made a pointless post but can't delete on the mobile site for some reason. My PC has gone tits-up.
