Golden_Sonic
So I'm looking for a cheap but good bass to learn but I'd like that the bass were short scale so that also my girlfriend can learn to play it. I haven't so much money for an Epiphone EB0 or a Squier Bronco Bass and the famous SX 3/4 basses Are not available (nobody sells them) where I live. I found these basses on a famous german website and the price is good for my budget; the basses are the following: 1) Jack and Danny Mini PB: http://www.musicstore.de/it_IT/ITL/Bassi/Bassi-elettrici-a-4-corde/Jack-and-Danny-PB-Mini-Black-/art-BAS0004807-000 2) Jack and Danny Mini JB: http://www.musicstore.de/it_IT/ITL/Bassi/Bassi-elettrici-a-4-corde/Jack-and-Danny-JB-Mini-SB-Sunburst/art-BAS0007168-000 3) Jack and Danny Vintage 1963 P Bass: http://www.musicstore.de/it_IT/ITL/Bassi/Bassi-elettrici-a-4-corde/Jack-and-Danny-PB-Vintage-1963-FSR-Fiesta-Red/art-BAS0007157-000 I read a discussion about the Jack and Danny Vintage Jazz Basses and people were satisfied of the purchase and the good quality at a low price; but I'm afraid that the Mini Basses are not the same thing: I read that the Harley Benton short scale P Bass, for example, is a total garbage and I'm very interesting in the J&D Mini P Bass (my dream, a precision with a real short scale, 29" in the specs on the site); the Mini JB would be the second choice (same scale) and, if the Mini Basses are not good, I'd buy that Vintage 1963 P Bass. So my questions are: what about the quality of these J&D Mini Basses (especially the mini P Bass)? And that Vintage 1963 P Bass? Is the quality the same of the Vintage Jazz Bass? I hope to finde someone that can give me some elucidation here.

I always think of the US Radio Interviews with Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols on Some Product Carri On Sex Pistols when I hear the name of these basses. alyctes
I don't know anything about the J+D basses but the Ibanez GSRM-20 is nice (available from Thomann, last time I checked). But do change the strings, the factory ones with mine were rubbish... Edited July 15, 2014 by alyctes
Golden_Sonic
So nobody knows/has bought/has tried these J&D models, isn't it?
subdude
hi, what makes you say the harley benton short scales are rubbish? the hundreds of positive ratings and reviews seem to contradict that? anyway, i have never touched a J&D shortscale but the " '75 vintage" jazz clone i play is of outstanding quality given the low price. i have no reason to believe the P clone would be any different. at this price point you have to be prepared to do setup and sometimes even some fret work but if you are able and willing to do that you will have a ton of fun with these basses. Snifferxxx
Just bought myself the Jack and Danny short scale jazz, pretty good for £69 including gig bag, couple of rough edges but sounds pretty good for the low cost.
Shockwave
Digital Village in the UK sell them. http://www.dv247.com.../Ascending/-/1/ J&D are the exact same basses as the Harley Benton ones, just without the Wilkinson hardware. oh...it's_a_squier
I have a couple of the Harley Benton shorty p basses and they're not at all garbage. In fact, they're quite nice to play. Not as nice as a modern Squier, but along the lines of a late ninties Squier maybe. Very good for the money imho

kodiakblair
Over on the Harley Benton Club it's commonly thought 4 or 5 different factories build them, the Danish fella in charge Lasse said as much a few year back. Saein definitely had a hand in at one time, my Shine VI is identical to the older HB 6 strings. OP if you want to see some great HB shorties check out blablas thread in the build diaries,he'd be able to give you an honest opinion on their quality too. Naetharu
Hi Golden Sonic and welcome! A few people have already pointed you in the direction of the Harley Benton basses from Thomann. I'd do much the same. I own two of them - one which is a copy of a Fender Jazz and another that is a six-string. Both of them are really good basses that I would be happy to gig with and they cost under £100 each. The other one to have a look at is the entry level stuff from the Ibanez Sound-Gear range (The so-called 'SR' basses). They are full 34" scale but the necks are very narrow and thin, so they should be perfectly comfortable for someone with smaller hands. They're very good quality too and can be found 2nd hand very cheap.

ikay
The HB shorty PB has 19 frets and a rounded heel, the J&D mini PB has 20 frets and a square heel
paulnb57
I have a Harley Benton PB shorty, it's great for the money, I changed the strings, pots, pickup and set it up, I'd gig it without hesitation...
jrixn1
I've just bought a J&D Mini Jazz as a spare to live in the back of the van. Cost: £73.99 incl shipping Weight: 3.1 kg Scale length: 28 1/2" (measured 14 1/4" from nut to 12th fret). Colour: sonic blue! Quite fun noodling around for the last hour or so. Might do a gig with it!
jrixn1
Update: J&D Mini has been in the back of my van for the last year or so. Haven't needed it as an actual back-up, but have done a couple of gigs with it out of choice. It sounds good, it's really fun to play - and it's so, so light! Happy with it stock, including the strings - just pimped it recently with the cream pickup covers. (N.B. can confirm pickups are standard/full-size.) Would you mind telling me where you got the cream pickup covers from? I've just bought the exact same bass - loving it so far but the cream mod would be great to do! If you could point me in the right direction, that'd be greatly appreciated...
