UglyDog Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 (edited) So, this tune popped onto the radio this morning. Now I've never been a fan of the Byrds by any stretch, and so I'm fairly unfamiliar with much of their catalogue... but when it reached 1:43 and the 'guitar solo' started, I was transfixed and not in a good way. I mean, whose idea was it to keep it? Did nobody think to say "actually Rog, could you do another take mate, I'm errm not sure about that one"? Or were they all too stoned to care? Have a listen if you can stand it. 1:43 to 2:20, and then remarkably he has another go at around 2:58 with similarly stunning results. Does anybody know of a worse guitar solo? And I don't mean just one you don't like in an "anything by Yngwie, I can't stand him" way, I mean something that is truly awful, dreadful by anyone's yardstick. Real car crash stuff. ps. for some reason I can't get this video to embed. Edited July 17, 2014 by charic embedded the vid for you :) Quote

Dad3353 Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 What..? Great classic..! Marvellous stuff. Pre-punk, too..! Certainly somewhat 'dissonant' at times, and lacking technicity, but harmonic rules can be stretched on occasion; it helps 'expand one's conscience'..! I would add that you are perhaps unaware of some Frank Zappa works, or the good Capt. Beefheart..? You might find the Byrds to be Mozart in comparison..! Chill out, man..! Peace..! Love... Quote
BigRedX Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Well the obvious one is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkQ0tpQmobc Although being the Bonzos the guitar solo is supposed to be bad. And then there's the Swell Maps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmqO4cUISkY The reason why your URL won't bed is because you are using the secure (https) link to YouTube. Why are you doing this? discreet Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Eight Miles High is one of my favourite songs of all time and the guitar solo is a classic of the genre. You're obviously not taking the right drugs! My favourite, er... 'unusual' guitar solo is in You Really Got Me by The Kinks - another belter! Beer of the Bass Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I like that Byrds example, though it's very much of its era. I think it was meant to be as wigged-out as that, and why not? I think my favourite not-really-a-guitar-solo happens at about 2 minutes into this live Bo Diddley song. It's kind of awful but great at the same time. Also, he must have been stupidly loud as he's standing in front of two Fender Showman stacks and you can hear the speakers farting out on the low end!
Yeah, I'm going to stick up for it too - it is rather Coltrane-esque, just executed on a (12-string?) guitar and played in the context of a rock song rather than jazz. I'll admit my ignorance having not been born 'til about 20 years after this came out, but I get the impression jazz and rock shared a lot of common ground at the time, as opposed to these days when a lot of rock musicians refer to "the 'J' word" with a mix of disgust and fear. Cosmo Valdemar Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 (edited) I like the Eight Miles High solos. very dificult to replicate! I remember some guitar magazine transcribed it and had theri version on the CD. If played 'straight' it sounds diabolical. The solo that makes my skin crawl with embarassment is, without a doubt, Hi Ho Silver Lining. Double-tracked, but it's as if he can't remember what he played the first time, so the second take is this awful, fumbling thing. It's truly wretched! I won't post it as I respect you all far too much. And I'm at work and can't access Youtube. Edited July 17, 2014 by Cosmo Valdemar Quote
