Grand Wazoo Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 A legend, and one by one we are losing them all R.I.P. http://consequenceofsound.net/2014/07/r-i-p-johnny-winter-blues-legend-dead-at-70/ Quote
EliasMooseblaster Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Just heard about this myself - a truly superb player, and a sad loss. Quote
andydye Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 comes to us all but always takes us by surprise Quote
TheGreek Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Am I the only one who thinks that 70 isn't that old...FFS Vera Lynn is still alive... Quote
Coilte Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Sad news indeed..and still comparitively young. R.I.P. Quote
Mickeyboro Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Yet they have him touring Europe promoting a new album - why? These guys are so often a meal ticket for many other people and (cf Amy Winehouse) the needs of the individual are too often forgotten. M Quote
flyfisher Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014
Am I the only one who thinks that 70 isn't that old...FFS Vera Lynn is still alive...
Nope, 70 is not really that old, but I'm guessing that Vera Lynn has led a 'less demanding' lifestyle. I remember being mildly shocked at seeing (on DVD) Winter shuffle onto stage for the 2007 Crossroads Guitar Festival (the 3-yearly concerts organised by Clapton for his Antigua rehab facility) and have to sit down for his short performance, so I reckon it's quite an achievement for him still to have been touring when he died seven years later. As for why he was still touring while in such frail health, I guess that's just what he was used to doing. BB King also has serious health problems and had to sit through the Royal Albert Hall concert I attended about 10 years ago, but he's still touring and I quite expect to read some similar news about him dying while on tour one day. It's just what these guys do. It's sad, of course, but at least their musical legacy will go on. Quote
Allie Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Was watching him on a recording of OGWT not long ago too - very sad loss. RIP. 70's not old - I'm not far off and still going strong. Quote
madshadows Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Very sad news, another guitar legend gone John Quote
Dad3353 Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I saw him striding across a fairly small stage back in the '70s, belting it out. Fantastic presence; sublime musicianship. Given the life-style, 70-odd is about par, I should think. RIP, you've done your bit,and done it good. A great man, in many ways. Quote

doctorbass Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 A very sad loss. Got to see him play only once and I've had the pleasure of playing one of his guitars, Also met his Woodstock era drummer Uncle John Turner before he died - one hell of a player! Quote
norvegicusbass Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Very sad news indeed. RIP to a great guitar hero. Quote
discreet Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I'll always remember him for his performance of Jumpin' Jack Flash on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1974. Which via the gift of YouTube I reproduce here. http://youtu.be/wQPlU5q1CBI Quote
skej21 Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I've had the honour of playing in a band that opened up for Johnny a few times. A real legend and a thoroughly decent guy. He'll be missed. Quote
He didn't look in the best of health (to put it mildly) when I saw him about 20 years ago, so perhaps we should be glad that he carried on as long as he did! RIP Johnny - I shall dig out Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo later in tribute... Quote
I saw him around the same time. Jon Paris on bass and neck-brace harmonica? Felt slightly cheated that JW played most of the gig on his Erlewine Lazer and may not have been alone in that sentiment. A cheer went up when a roadie finally handed him the Firebird. Quote

Count Bassy Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I loved his version of, Johhny B. Goode! He's gone but the music remains. A sad loss, and 70 is way too young. Quote
Len_derby Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 He re-ignited Muddy Water's career with the 'Hard Again' album in 1977. Producing the album and happily taking a backing guitar role. A giant of the blues-rock world. Quote
chriswareham Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 His music is not something that's normally my cup of tea, but the OGWT performance of Jumpin Jack Flash is phenomenal. Great musicianship and showmanship. Quote

scalpy Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Texted this news to my guitarist, a big JW fan, also a gp. He said 70 was probably a long life for someone who slept with Janis Joplin! Quote
alembic63 Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 A sad loss.......to me this is what Johnny Winter was all about, the awesome "Stranger blues" ....with some serious slide .....RIP http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytdsPVkNCOM Quote
