I will be joning a few fellow (pro) musicians in doing an Extreme Pornograffitti night. WE will play the whole album (plus a few other tracks) all in aid of charity. I'm a massive fan so I know it ALMOST inside out. I will learn it pretty much note for note (which i can almost do but a few of the faster bits I just cant work out yet), but getting that 80's/early 90's tone is extremely important too. My board currently has an MS60b which has a number of decent preamp sims, so hopefully somone out there knows roughly what Pat does to get the Pornograffitti tone.
Thanks for your help

I'm just curious really, but how many in the audience are going to be shaking their heads and muttering that mid-90s tone with those songs is so wrong?

I doubt that your drummer will be sweating cos he doesn't have the same kit, skins & sticks as Extremes drummer. He's going to bring what he uses every gig. Sure, you can tweak your tone a bit, but I wouldn't worry about it too much. The guitarists on the other hand will need to nail their sounds..... :)

I think most of the "it doesn't matter" replies are because not many on here are familiar with who you are referring to - maybe post a clip of the sound you're after?

That is a pretty arrogant assumption. Why must the OP provide a clip of something that is easily found online? Also, how can you say something like "most of the 'x' replies" where there has only been three replies, of which one was humorous.

Looks like GK cabs at least. I reckon pick style and a little drive and treble boost will get you 90% of the way there.

That or just get a Musicman Stingray/Sterling.

In what way is my post arrogant? Pat Badger probably isn't very well known on here, that's all. And as for posting a clip, the OP doesn't have to do anything but if he had I imagine he would have received a more positive response. Not everyone feels inclined to go search the internet on a whim but if an example is given I know I myself would have a listen and help the OP if I could. No 'arrogance' there at all, genuinely trying to help the OP.

As far as that YT vid is concerned... I'd say this is about right. It's a fairly scooped sound. P Bass, Pick, Fridge!

I don't think many of us would have thought your reply to be arrogant. :)

I'd think GK or Mesa for core amp tone, maybe an older Washburn for authenticity or a punchy Spector for a quality rock tone.

A Mouradian would be cool though :)

OK it appears that I misinterpreted your misinterpretation of my post, in which I was genuinely asking a question as I don't think getting the sound is important, but the OP clearly wanted to. My apologies.

Seeing them back when at wembley arena I seem to recall a whole row of bass cabs/monitors across the entire width of stage and PA possibly being something to do with the live bass tone

It's weird reading Pat Badger's name all these years later. I remember the kids in the year below at school all being big fans of Extreme "back in the day" but then they all got into grunge. I guess my year were into the crop of bands beforehand.

I think playing with a pick over the pickup would get you in the right ball park regardless of bass / rig. I assume the trade value of those Washburns is pretty minimal in 2014 but happy to be corrected.

Loads of players were using spectors at this time for that tone. Alice in chains / skid row / bang tango / crimson glory etc. the videos for get the funk out, decadence dance, more than words all had spectors on show as I recall.
I shouldn't recall but sadly I do.

I'm interested to know the type of event at which you'll be performing. Is it aimed specifically at musicians or fans of 90's rock? I can't imagine the general public being particularly interested, or even knowing who Extreme are. This is why my idea of performing the whole of Styx's "The Grand Illusion" or Night Ranger's "Midnight Madness" has never got off the ground!

Of course, I hope it's a huge success for you.

From what I can remember, around the time of Pornograffiti - Pat was using a Kramer Spector P/J bass and Mesa Boogie amp and cabs...though if you've got a twitter account you could ask the man himself!

Cheers for the replies folks! (or atleast most of them). I will likely aim down the scooped GK with a slight grind route. Thats what I've naturally dialled in already to get the tone. I'm playing a P/J bass, and I'm a finger style player so playing with a pick is challenging enough.

I just feel though that there seems to be just a bit of a honk (for want of a better word) to the tone of the recording. Might be more down to theproduction rather than Pats setup though.

You're right it will havea limited appeal, but the album has alot more fans than you first might think. Considerin it has the huge song 'more than words' on it, there was a wider fan base back in the day than just the general rock fans. My mates gran has the album!

We're also doing it as a charity do, and the venue wont be big, so even if its just a night in the pub with 30 mates then it'll still be a worthwhile cause (and ticks off a dream of mine since I first heard it in the late 90's)
