No matter how much or how little you spend on a bass, always pay a bit extra and get your bass set up by an experienced tech/repair person/luthier.
You don't have to fight the thing.
It will be much easier to play (hard to put down even), will sound better and you won't end up damaging yourself long term.

Always carry a drum key, sticks, spare guitar strings, plectrums, spare instrument and speaker leads, plug and amp fuses, side cutters, screwdrivers, super glue, gaffa tape and so on and so forth - because your drummer and guitarist never will! :D

Absolutely.

Then - when you get a chance - learn how to do a bass set-up yourself. It's surprisingly easy and saves you a fortune, particularly if you're like many BC-ers here and work your way through lots of different basses.

Did I mention not wearing hats with 'Bass Player' printed on them?

Learn backwards.

Learn the last part of a piece first; then the bit before it; and so on. That way you're always going from hard stuff to easy, and you don't fall into the trap of never getting to the end.

This this this this this.

Best thing I ever learned as a musician.

Some good gig advice. I suppose marrying a woman is much easier these days. Not sure what my bloke would make of that, even with the small hands. I think if I'd add something, it would be to remember to check that you've retuned after a drop D! Arg. I like the idea of different colour leads but getting to the front isn't so easy. We all know that one guitarist takes up half the available space.

Can't get to the front? Stand behind the guitarist and ram your headstock repeatedly into his kidneys. Keep it tight on the 2 and the 4.

He won't be taking up much space on stage when he's outside lying down in an ambulance. ;)
