miles'tone
No matter how much or how little you spend on a bass, always pay a bit extra and get your bass set up by an experienced tech/repair person/luthier. You don't have to fight the thing. It will be much easier to play (hard to put down even), will sound better and you won't end up damaging yourself long term. Bloodaxe
When playing with a new drummer for the first few times, position yourself so that you can see their right foot/bass drum pedal. The visual cue cuts down the time it takes to lock in. Less is usually more, except when it isn't.

paulbass
Always carry a drum key, sticks, spare guitar strings, plectrums, spare instrument and speaker leads, plug and amp fuses, side cutters, screwdrivers, super glue, gaffa tape and so on and so forth - because your drummer and guitarist never will!
This sums it up to a tee!!
Absolutely. Then - when you get a chance - learn how to do a bass set-up yourself. It's surprisingly easy and saves you a fortune, particularly if you're like many BC-ers here and work your way through lots of different basses. Did I mention not wearing hats with 'Bass Player' printed on them? Even worse than a leather porkpie. Avoid.

Bassman Steve
Work with your drummer. Lock in to the groove and stay there. If they yell 'bass solo' just ignore them. No advice on hats, I just look a total idiot in a hat. Mind you, as an aside, I do have an aversion to guitarists in hats. I reckon SRV has a lot to answer for on that front. Bassman Steve
Oh yes, do take everyone else's spares. I used to tour with a case full of such stuff and was the only person not to ever need anything from it!

Westie9
I'm in a five piece and everyone has a different coloured lead going into the PA. It makes it easier to connect and identify a problem. Bit OCD though....
uncle psychosis
Learn backwards. Learn the last part of a piece first; then the bit before it; and so on. That way you're always going from hard stuff to easy, and you don't fall into the trap of never getting to the end. julietgreen
Some good gig advice. I suppose marrying a woman is much easier these days. Not sure what my bloke would make of that, even with the small hands. I think if I'd add something, it would be to remember to check that you've retuned after a drop D! Arg. I like the idea of different colour leads but getting to the front isn't so easy. We all know that one guitarist takes up half the available space. Keep it tight on the 2 and the 4. He won't be taking up much space on stage when he's outside lying down in an ambulance.
