philw
Can anybody recommend the best/cheapest place to go for a custom made scratch plate? Ta Phil
Lozz196
Since The Bass Doc can`t do these anymore, I`ve read recommendations about Sims: http://www.simscustom.com/html/home.htm
Dazed
I've read people are impressed with Spitfires products but they aren't cheap. http://spitfiretortoiseshellpickguards.wordpress.com/
philw
Thanks both. I have a quote of £58 inc shipping (for a Jaguar bass scratch plate) from these guys: http://www.jacksinstrumentservices.com Does that seem reasonable? Does anybody have experience of them? discreet
You won't get better than Spitfire - if you're looking for a tort guard.

Phil
Sims is £40 for custom plastic pickguards ex.postage though. £80 for genuine period correct celluloid tort. Spitfire's tort looks to be the best now he's on the scene. What does he make it from I wonder? Celluloid? Or some new material I wonder. Edited July 21, 2014 by miles'tone
philw
Yeah I just noticed Sims is cheaper - quite surprised at that. I'm not looking for tort, no. Never really liked it myself. It's mint green for me. P
miles'tone
http://www.simscustom.com/html/00pricing.htm Sorry got my prices wrong, been a while since I bought mine. They're from £48.50 it seems. Top quality though. Edited July 21, 2014 by miles'tone

Been thinking about one for my Candy apple red P bass
JTUK
Sims is £40 for custom plastic pickguards ex.postage though. £80 for genuine period correct celluloid tort.
I can vouch for Sims as they made me a great tort plate. It wasn't cheap but then they deal and work with a lot of top luthiers so you get what you pay for. I wasn't sure of the pick and colour myself but these guys know all about finishes and they were spot on. I couldn't have been more pleased with the result. I've seen some very cheap looking printed things which are really quite disgusting and you can't be thinking about putting one of tjhose on your bass...??? I think you need to be thinking of £60-80 for a very good looking plate...
gafbass02
I'm after a clear one, anyone got a recommendation?
JTUK
I've had a clear one made..again by Sims..so I got the Tort and Clear done at the same time. The Clear perspex one was thicker than the one that came off... not that made any real difference to me but I am near enough to take both basses down and see how the ideas and colourings will work. philw
I've emailed Sims with an enquiry. Let's see. P
Billy Apple
I would steer clear of Spitfire. I ordered a guard off him and what he was going to supply was not as described on his website. He is a man who won't listen to anyone but himself. He says what he produces is art and therefore however it turns out you have to accept it. He will not offer an alternative and If you ask for your money back he steals a 35% fee from you. Please read about my experience here with this charlaton Edited August 7, 2014 by Billy Apple
philw
Just to tie-up loose ends, I ordered a custom scratch plate from Sims and it all worked out a treat. £53 including return shipping. P
