Simon.
Howdy folks, I known that along with myself there are a few other residents of these parts who are fans of the old Precision Lyte from the Japanese branch of Fender. In a recent Ebay trawl, I can across the following: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-japan-PRECISION-BASS-made-in-Japan-MIJ-ZOOM-506-Electric-RefNo-42045-/171369337940?pt=Guitar&hash=item27e6689454 My initial thought was that £250 for a P-Lyte wasn't bad, and then I looked at it again and noticed the 5 control knobs. On any model I've seen previously there's only ever been 4. Anyone have any ideas what this set-up is about?

chrismuzz
Interesting how the strings haven't been put in the nut grooves properly.
ahpook
There was a Deluxe model with 5 knobs iirc, but I think it had a humbucker at the bridge.
dudewheresmybass
Looks like a hybrid of the deluxe and standard models. The knobs are correct for the deluxe, but as already mentioned, the deluxe had the larger humbucker at the bridge The jack socket doesn't look consistent though either. The Dlx I used had the rugby ball shaped plate iirc.
Also +1 The Deluxe version had a humbucker in the bridge and 5 knobs. I never saw a Deluxe that wasn't that boring dark wood finish (not saying they don't exist, just never seen one) I seem to recall seeing somewhere (a long time ago, when I had my Lyte) that there may have been a very short-lived Lyte Deluxe just badged as Lyte with a jazz pickup and 5 knobs but whether that is true or not... The input jack may well have been changed as almost all of the factory ones were cheap and poorly soldered - I know about 4 or 5 Lyte owners (one of whom has several and plays them exclusively) and all bar one have had them replaced.
I noticed that too, I wondered if he was being ultra honest and had moved them to one side to show the scratches the roundwound E string had made in the rosewood fretboard. You still have to zoom in to see therm clearly though, in general looks in good nick.
Simon.
I noticed the different jack socket as well - round and recessed, rather than the oval shaped, face-plate type on the standard model. The bridge unit is substantially different from the one used on the standard Lyte, as well. So, a Deluxe, but with the wrong bridge pickup... Edited July 23, 2014 by Simon. Simon.
Just had a brief trawl round 'tinternet and from the photos I could find, the bridge is wrong for a Deluxe, and the headstock transfer is all wrong too. Should have a s/n under the Fender logo, a "Made in ..." under the Percision Bass text and the "Lyte" graphic should be right under the g-string tuner, not round the corner. There's a Talkbass thread here >> http://www.talkbass.com/threads/fender-precision-bass-lyte-mij.1035387/ which has some good pics showing a Deluxe. 12stringbassist
Standard layout from mine. Screws on back of the bass looked all wrong. I think I have seen the 5 knob option before. That string was probably out of the nut to show fret wear or lack of it. 5 knob version from google search.. Get a load of that thick pickup near the bridge!
