Mykesbass
Seem to be quite a few actors, presenters etc. taking on second careers as gigging musicians, with some (Ade Edmonson) seeming to really put in the graft. Just thought I'd start a list off with the ones I know about and elicit opinions as to how people see this? Ade Edmonson - Bad Shepherds Hugh Laurie - Copper Bottom Band Mark Kermode - don't know the name but is double bass player in a skiffle/rockabilly band Tim Dowling - Guardian/Radio Times columnist - Police Dog Hogan (other bands would kill for the publicity he has given them in his columns) Mark Butcher - blues band Steven Seagal - some dreadful racket served up as blues! Any others of note?
Prime_BASS
The lad Macauley Culkin is in some weird pizza themed band, they got boo'd off stage at Rock City. Michael Cera, actor of divot pilgrim, does actually play bass in some band, I heard they are ok. Keanu Reeves also plays bass, I ding know if his band is still going. Him who was lead in Mice of Men and CSI:NY plays bass too.

joeystrange
Juliette Lewis had a band called Juliette & The Licks who were a really solid rock n roll band. Dave Grohl even played drums on their third album. Neil Buchanan (off of Art Attack) was in a metal band called Marseille back in the '70s. They reformed a few years ago and I heard that they're not the greatest band but he's apparently a really good guitarist. Zooey Deschanel has played in a duo called She & Him for years. She thinks she only got the role in Elf because she could sing. Johnny Depp has been in and out of bands for years. He played some guitar on an Oasis album and has played the odd song live with Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, Aerosmith... These are a few of those that I can think of that are genuine musos and really have in interest in making music. On sure there are plenty that do it solely as publicity stunts too.
On Scott Pilgrim, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who played Ramona Flowers, recently started a band called Got A Girl who have just released a record. And that guy is Gary Sinise. He plays bass in Gary Sinise & the Lt. Dan Band. He also once played in an episode of CSI:NY. Edited July 24, 2014 by joeystrange
bassintheface
I was in a band who supported Julliette and the licks when they toured the UK a few years back. Great guys and a great bass player called Paul Lill. Had an awesome JPJ type custom made Jazz. It was surreal standing at a bar chatting to Juliette Lewis about General life stuff. I kept thinking 'Brad Pitt has nailed you' for some odd reason!! ; ) I also had the motor home scene off 'from dusk till dawn' going through my head! She was really really nice and friendly though. leftybassman392
Word I've heard about Mark Butcher is that he's pretty good at it. Personally I think he made the right career choice... woodster
Jeff Stewart (Reg Hollis from The Bill) played percussion in my band for a while. He even came to Switzerland for a stint we did out there and claimed at the time that it was a 'life-changing experience.'
I went to see him on a tour about 7 years ago. I felt compelled to send a note to the venue for his attention pointing out that his backing band "Thunderbox" had a name that meant toilet in the area. During the gig he claimed to have had guitar lessons off (IIRC) Muddy Waters and Albert Collins while "sat on the stoop of the family home". Apparently he also claims to have had martial arts lessons from a Japanese master who was dead before Seagal was born - but his band isn't called Thunderbox anymore.
