Author Stephen King played guitar for the rock band Rock Bottom Remainders, several of whose members are authors. Other members include Dave Barry, Ridley Pearson, Scott Turow, Amy Tan, James McBride, Mitch Albom, Roy Blount, Jr., Matt Groening, Kathi Kamen Goldmark, Sam Barry, and Greg Iles.

Woody Allen play a credible jazz clarinet and has his own band. Clint Eastwood plays Jazz piano and Dustim Hoffman is also an accomplished pianist but more in the classical vein. Not sure if these last two are in bands per se but they do play and very well. Comedian Steve Martin plays banjo and guitar in bands, Kevin Bacon plays in a coutntry band (The Bacon Brothers), Jack Black leads Teacious D, Jeff Bridges plays piano (see The Fabulous Baker Boys), Ryan Gosling (Dead Man's Bones), Billy Bob THornton plays in a country band, Alan Arkin sand with a olk group, Pauline MOrna (Miss Lemon in Poirot) was a bass player as was Mr. Kidd from Diamonds Are Forever (Putter Smith). Charlie CHaplin was a muso (wrote 'Smile', amongst others).. I guess it is a common thing to work in more than one field of art. There are lots of musician/photgraphers, musician/authors, musician/painters etc. Makes perfect sense when you think about it.

@Bilbo. Steve Martin is actually a very handy banjo player in his own right, and could have had a pretty decent career if he so chose (IMHO of course):

There's a bit of chat but the music starts at around 3:20

...and unless I've missed something we've all forgotten about Jimmy Nail:

He did but I'm not sure it was entirly serious..... It was hilariously pants though.

I'm afraid to say it was deadly serious... Might have been a bit more entertaining had tongues been planted firmly in cheeks.

This actually makes me find it more amusing... rubbish bands that take themselves seriously are much funnier than those trying to be ironic.

My friend works for a company in upstate NY that make custom drum heads and amp grilles.
They just made a drum head for The Bacon Brothers which features Kevin Bacon. And his brothers.

There's the Band From TV. Loads of actors in there, I don't recognise most of their names, but I do their faces. They're good fun.

Jesse Spencer (Neighbours and House) is ace.

And that guy is Gary Sinise. He plays bass in Gary Sinise & the Lt. Dan Band. He also once played in an episode of CSI:NY.

Gary Sinise is actually listed as an endorsee on the Cort website!

R2 DJ Mark Radcliffe (formerly of Mark and Lard fame) has toured a Feelgoods tribute supporting Wilko which frankly takes some balls, IMO.

Seen below with BC-er Wayne58 on bass. Good band and in no way a vanity project.

Pretty sure a BassChatter got the gig for the reformed Marseille - I remember the thread as I worked with a couple of the guys in a record promotion company in NW London in the early 80's.

my band supported them a couple years back in Carlisle. . The lead singer was a great guy and full of crack. .. mr buchanan on the other hand was all aloof and a bit of a tool to be honest
Marc Radcliffe was also in Cock Sparrer before they got very political, and racist.

Dudley Moore was a musician before he was an actor.

Robert Downey Jr. isn't a bad singer :)

That is fantastic. RDJnr sings it just right, great phrasing, good presence.

Is it me or has Sting turned into Wilko Johnson?

Also someone mentioned John McEnroe - I remember a long while ago somebody posted a video of him playing all the instruments on a video - drums, guitar, bass, keys - all to a very high standard. Parts of the vid were a split screen showing him doing all the bits. Anyone remember it or have a link? I can't find it.
