Wood/Finish colour question

Hi all

Just a quick question regarding finishes on woods.

If I had 4 pieces of wood, (say Alder, Maple, Ash and Basswood), which of the woods would darken the most once any neutral varnish/oil was applied to them?

I'd say ash/basswood.

I remember my Dad's 1970's Readers Digest DIY manual had a set of pages on wood colour which would have answered that question perfectly. Its in NZ now unfortunately and I don't have the most recent version to check.

However you could probably answer that question by wiping half of one face of each piece of wood with some meths or white spirit.

Thanks for the replies. Had an idea that Ash would darken the most but wanted it confirmed from elsewhere.

I had a copy of that Readers Digest book too at one time; sadly I lent it out and never got it back.
