Mykesbass Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 (edited) A heads up for anyone into Big Bands/Swing - a great looking late night Prom next Friday (8th) with BBC4 showing it on the 17th: http://www.bbc.co.uk...august-08/14990 Edited August 3, 2014 by Mykesbass Quote
AttitudeCastle Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Very keen for this! Been playing Trombone in Swing bands for 7/8 years now, should be great! Quote
2004gdavi Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 One for me. I've been in bands playing this type of music for 30 years and it's great to see how well it's appreciated by even younger audiences today. If you haven't tried this type of music give it a go and see what you've been missing. Quote
fretmeister Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Big band and swing are probably my favourite genres. Currently waiting for postie to deliver the new Cherry Poppin Daddies CD from the US - it's not available in the UK until next year and I won't wait! Quote
Ticktock Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I love big band music. Ta for the heads up. Quote
seashell Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Another vote for Big Bands here! I'll try to catch the Prom :-) Quote
Bassman Sam Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Don't mean a thing. I'll be watching for sure. Thanks for the heads up. Quote
spencer.b Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 I love the big band sound thanks for the heads up Quote
Bilbo Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Depends on the band. I have long enjoyed larger ensembles including Kenny Wheeler's stuff, Maria Schneider, Gil Evan's stuff with Miles, some of Bob Mintzer's stuff, Loose Tubes, Delightful Precipice, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Bob Brookmeyer etc etc but some of the older swing band stuff leaves me a bit cold. Big Band is like any other genre, chock full of good and bad. I have played with big bands in the past and really enjoy it but it's been a while. Quote
lowdown Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Yep, love the whole big band thing. One of the only gigs I will go and do for petrol money.....lol. I was hoping it would be more across the board with a broader repertoire, Other than just the likes of Basie & Ellington etc (although great stuff). But hey, better than nothing and IS billed as 30/40's swing bands of the day. Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band are getting a real good listening from me at the moment. Quote

I love the way the arrangement builds up until the Tenor solo. The section writing is terrific, love the Tango vibe. Quote
GarethFlatlands Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Nice, I've been getting into swing since starting learning trupmet about 18 months ago! I'll have to try and remember to catch this. Quote
Bilbo Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 The above is by no means the best Maria Schneider arrangement but I added the video on the fly and didn't really get a chance to find the best ones. I would recommend anyone who is interested in large ensemble writing to listen to Maria's work. She learned her craft at the feet of Gil Evans and Bob Brookmeyer but has long since found her own voice as an arranger so any of her stuff is worth seeking out. She is one of those artists who has got the measure of the 'industry' and runs her own lebel/distributes her own stuff via her website. The Pretty Road is a favourite of mine from her 'Sky Blue' album. Her use of voice and accordian are a specific texture that marks a lot of her recent work. If I wrote one piece as good as any of hers, I would die happy. http://www.mariaschneider.com/ Quote

kevin_lindsay Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 I saw the BBC Big Band a couple of weekends ago at the Glasgow BBC Studios with Maceo Parker on lead vocals and saxophone - great evening. Quote
Count Bassy Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 I'm big and I like bands. Does that count? Quote
