CamdenRob Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I always thought the widely accepted bass sound characteristics were; P Bass - Thump J Bass - Burp Rick - Clank Warwick - Growl With everything else basically being a variation of the above with differing amounts of twang, rumble and zing... LukeFRC Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 personally I would be looking at this and asking Chris what he would think about making this part of the design.... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/239238-acg-eq03/page__p__2513463__hl__acg__fromsearch__1#entry2513463 Quote
Skol303 Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Go for bubinga. On everything. Even the strings Quote

Alpher strings are really good! Quote

LukeFRC Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014
HAHAHAHAHA FLAME THROWER HEADSTOCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Chris Sorry I'm really really sorry that both the dogs got burnt, I saw the photos on Facebook and they do look odd without any hair. It must be hard to have to rub ointment into them every three hours. I guess you have the time now, how long do you think before you get the workshop up and running? Real shame about Alex, I'm sure you'll miss him. At this point PLEASE PLEASE can I point out that I had nothing to do with the flame thrower idea- I wouldn't suggest something that, as we now know, is so dangerous. I just was making a few suggestions to Roon and suggested they could help his Alpher bass "light up the stage" and he took it a bit literally. Luke Quote
Kiwi Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014
Why are you asking us? Surely that's a part of what you are paying your luthier for - to advise you on the best way to get the sound, feel and look that you are after. IMO if your luthier isn't doing this for you, then you have the wrong one.
Its more than just a luthier, its also what kind of wood they have in stock. My Spectors are also growly but because they use soft maple. The maple that Jon Shuker uses is too stiff to be growly without a healthy dose of wenge. The maple is almost like graphite. Dood's headless 6 sounds nice and growly though. Martin Petersen makes some amazing wenge and maple necks. Urb's bass has exactly the kind of growl I've been looking for. The Yamaha BBNEII Is also very growly but has a 5 piece maple and mahogany through neck and alder wings. Old Musicman Stingrays are super growly and some of the SR5s from the late 80's and early 90's are very growly too - maple neck and ash body. Each bass is its own recipe and has its own flavour of growl. The Yamaha is very soft and purry, the Spectors are a little barky and the stingray has an aggressive snarl. Quote
cocco Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 (edited)
Growl is such a loose term as it means so many different things to different people - to me, growl is a Precision or Rick being driven hard (think Live at Leeds or early Rush), whereas to some people growl is the back pickup of a Jazz bass. To me that's burp.
I'm with Ben, growl is a P with a pick through a big valve rig with a Sansamp. Edited August 5, 2014 by cocco Quote
lukeward2004 Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Growl is a streamer stage 2 with an OBP-3, bass and treble boosted slightly, and mids just a smidge over the centre position. THAT is just the most sexual bass tone! Quote
51m0n Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 (edited) I love this build diary, the chap making this is clearly entirely insane, no one else rolls their own oil filled capacitors, but the result is a growly as they come:- http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home-depot/169606-1960-jazzbass-build.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6E7iSATY7M Edited August 11, 2014 by icastle Link fixed. Kiwi Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 About as growly as a stingray - depends on who is playing it. Quote
